Emptied our two, admittedly we used them to water the garden about 5 times last year so £30 return. If you use alot of water and are going with the IBC thing connect as many downpipes as you can to them. I shouldn't admit this but I spent too much time last year looking at the level every time a drop of rain fell, using the house roof it was surprising how quickly they filled.

My house was one of the first in the village to have running water. They did it by collecting all the rain water from the gutters into an underground tank, and then there was a big hand pump to shift the water up into a galvanized tank in the loft. My current neighbour actually lived in our house when he was a child and he tells us it was his job every morning to pump it up. The tank is still in the loft (no way of getting it out) and the "well" is still there to, connected to the gutters. It's about 15' deep and 8' across, which by anybodies sums is a lot of water. Unfortunately years ago when they put the house onto mains water they punched a hole in the bottom of it so it never fills up now. Maybe for the price of a bag of cement I could re-commission it...?
