It may be illegal here, but like all illegal things, it still happens.

Usually because employees don't know their rights, and of course employers often don't either.

I doubt it happens often in large companies over here, but I wasn't aware it was actually illegal in the US, their employment law is a lot looser than ours.

If of course we're still taking about the same thing.

For clarity, we are talking about drive off's being taken out cashiers wages.

I doubt it happens in supermarkets, or in service areas such as Moto or Welcome Break, but most petroleum branded stations such as Esso, Shell, Total, etc, are run by self-employed franchisees.

These petrol stations have no more employees, and/or no more awareness of the law, than a corner shop. The impact of theft is right in the owners pocket too, so more temptation to take it out on the employee.

Many will see it just the same as working in a corner shop or a pub, ie: the employees responsibility to ensure the till is right when cashed up at the end of the shift. To inventivise this responsibility, if they've let somebody go without paying, charge the wrong amount (or they are skimming the till) the employer takes any shortfall out of the wages.

it is the same, because that's not legal either.

Can't dock wages of employees for anything like that.

That said, you can't put it in an employment contract that your employee won't join a union either and I've worked for some medium size companies that've done so.

I always take my lid off to fill up, just 'cos it's nice to get some fresh air round my head so I've never had a problem. Funnily enough though, today I filled at the local and was in a hurry and it was raining so I left my lid on. The guy didn't bat an eyelid, just happily took my money (for his overpriced petrol, grrrr 2p/litre more than Sainsburys).

That would be a point if pre-payment was applied across the board. When the sign in the petrol station's own windows, lists the reg. no., make & model of offending, thieving vehicles and they're all cars, it would suggest they're 'protecting' themselves and their wallets from the wrong motorists

Its also not legal in the majority of US states.
Thats why they went to pay first system on everything I guess.

When my works card refused to work and i'd filled up about 10pm on a friday night on the A1 the guy behind the counter started panicking as according to him he would have to foot the bill. I guess he was misinformed.

As for being told to get off the bike prior to filling up, i was told on my DAS that sitting on your bike whilst refuellig was illegal?
