I don't know if what I read about the Yamaha timings is correct, it was mostly just conjecture by the writers. Obviously Yamaha haven't actually revealed what they are doing.

I dont know what Yamaha are up to, but to my ears neither the Yamaha or the Kawasaki have that screaming high pitched in line four wail. The exhaust note to my ears is much deeper. Even the GP commentators have been calling the Yamaha "The Growler"

Again I might be wrong but I think Yamaha are able to run a different firing order as they have a balancer shaft in their engine to smooth things out

It's definitely safe to say that the Yamaha and the Kwaks (and I think the suzukis) don't sound like traditional IL4 (not that all of them are IL4s, but you know what I mean)

Boca...What a fountain of knowledge you are sir! You have it spot on in respect of the NSR500, there was only Mick Doohan that could tame that beast. Apparently it was vicious when it hit the power band. He used to psyche the other riders out with it! Alex Criville refused to ride it!

Stop it PH!

This noise thing....I think it's not so much to do with whether the cylinders are inline or not, it's to do with the relative spacing of the crank pins. That's what basically derives the firing sequence and the noise.

You can stick the cylinders anywhere to suit the package and I seem to remember an old Lancia engine that was actually a V4 but ran and sounded like an IL4 because owners didn't want them to sound too agricultural! And you get it on aeroplanes too - the difference between say a Spitfire (Merlin V12) and a Sea Fury (Centaurus 18 radial).

And I'm sure fizzwheel is right re balancers: you get huge harmonics because the firing impulses are not balanced. I read somewhere that the early big-bangers just shook themselves to bits!

I'm off now...I've bored even myself!

That's the kind of thing I like - bikes with reputations like that. Would love a go on an early TL1000 or the Laverda Jota, etc. just to see what they've got. Though I doubt I'd be pushing anywhere near enough to provoke something nasty

Suzuki is a V4 like the Ducati I think

Indeed, and from memory, the only IL4s in MotoGP are the Kwak and the Yam.

IL4 is supposed to be the least prefered configuration because it presents the largest frontal area.

Seems to work OK for Yamaha and Rossi though.
