i would have pulled out and riden on other side of road looking ahead watching front wheel of each vehicle as I approached, I would have dropped a gear to ensure they heard me. If your far enough over it gives some breathing space if vehicle does pull out to either brake or accelerate also giving you plenty to time to see vehicles coming other way, this is dependant on loads of things though.

If you feel unsure about over taking a vehicle then dont do it.

There's definitely a gut-instinct that you can develop there... even if you don't see something obvious, if it feels wrong then there can often be something that's there but you just haven't worked out what it is yet.
