you really need to learn about the heirarchy of management. the higher up you go, the less you do, but if things go wrong then it's your fault.
Midddle management is responsibility without authority. Those at the top of the tree don't want you shaking their branches so you have no authority to do anything without their say so. However, when it all goes tits up it is your responsibility not theirs.

I guess I fit into your big salaries category, But I also work an average about 60 hours a week. I m on call 24 Hours a day every day. When once asked to justify my salary my response was "It is not what I do, but what I can do". When the brown smelly stuff start flying I am the one that suddenly is in demand. I support construction projects round the world that run into the hundreds of millions $. LDs on these sort of jobs get into the million bucks a day. Therefore pressure can be a killer. Families have to learn the job comes first.

In saying that I have worked in some interesting places, Mainly in the far east. But a 6 month secondment in Dubai was sheer torture

contracted to 35 hours a week 4.6 days a week(shift worker)

More like 47 hours a week though averages over a year due to over time.

Basic salarie is £42K a year plus OT takes me to about £50K give or take a bit.

And i'm 24 years old working for the same employer i did when i left school at 16 and started my engineering appreticeship.

Probably already been said, but I earn somewhere between nothing and not enough. I'm salaried, though, so at least my laziness has very little effect on that.
