Zidane seems to have entered the serious players league.

"Collar turned up, back straight, chest stuck out, he glided into the arena as if he owned the ****ing place. Any arena, but nowhere more effectively than Old Trafford. This was his stage. He loved it, the crowd loved him. The players loved him too, for many reasons. Most importantly he got the job done." Keane on Cantona.

Those were the days my friends. Fouls were fouls. Get the job done.

Lifted from BBC News website:

BBC Radio Five Live asked for help from a deaf lip reader, Jessica Rees, who read the words phonetically to an Italian translator.

She deciphered the insult as being "you're the son of a terrorist *****" - a translation also carried by many national newspapers in Britain on Tuesday.

The BBC's Ten O'Clock News also called in experts to study the television footage of the incident and determined the following:

Materazzi's first word to Zidane was "no" before he then told him to "calm down".

He then accused him of being a "liar" and wished "an ugly death to you and your family" on the day the Frenchman's mother had been taken to hospital ill. This was followed by "Go f*** yourself".

Now of course Materazzi is going to plead the innocent and frankly he is making himself look even more pathetic in the manner in which he is doing so.

There are several issues here...racism and let's not forget the large banners displayed before every match at the World Cup and speeches made by team captains to the crowd regarding the issue.

There are also the painfull family issues that Zidane was dealing with and that Materazzi so horrendously abused.

Yes, Zidane was incorrect to react, but christ was Materazzi not deserving of it?

Reading what was said, I'm surprised that's all that was done to be honest.

He was without doubt a superb player but as such he should be able to deal with any verbal abuse thrown at him. There is no excuse for his behaviour regardless of what was said and FIFA should have fined him not given him player of the tournament. Players will always try to provoke a reaction from the opposition and I'm sure its not the first time he's had to deal with it so why react like that it the world cup final? On a brighter note it made the game a bit more interesting.

Yeah. I read that this is what Matrix allegedly said.
If thats true... then I understand his reaction. I know I know, pro player, only a game, blah blah, but thats the thing.
It is only a game.
That Matrix said that is over the line. He deserves a battering for it. I am not one for violence, when I saw the incident i was disgusted, but, yeah, sorry, he deserved it.

Still doesnt make what ZZ did right. But, it is only a game, you dont say those things, to anyone, ever.

ZZ has lost none of his class in my eyes (if thats what was said.) He was wrong to do it, but, meh, saying that is more distastful than head butting the guy.

The FIFA award was voted on by 1200 journalists and votes were submitted BEFORE the final.
