About that "heavy" water...
...if you remove a hydrogen atom from water, you get something that is lighter. And its certainly far removed from water! You get hydroxyl free radicals, which are highly reactive and play an important part in the depletion of ozone (O3) Heavy water is simply deutrated water i.e. the hydrogen atoms of the water are replaced by a common isotope of hydrogen, deuterium. This has an atomic mass unit of 2, compared to hydrogen's 1. Matt |
