But free climbing .... that is just too extreme for me!! ... just to make sure we are on the same page ... so you and K are telling me that you used to climb cliffs without ropes? I am not talking bouldering here, I am taking 100+ft vertical drops on to jagged rock, certain pain, probably death jobs here?!!?? like this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E3CTCwkzDjY That's nuts if that is the case!!! (BTW not unsurprisingly that dude is dead now ) ... the only time I have free-climbed anything (more than bouldering height ~15ft) is over deep water (deep water solo).

What grade were you free-climbing at?!?!? I'd want to to be a step ladder!!

Anyway, I almost hope this guy is a secret serial killer, at least it would make him more interesting!!

For all you know he goes home, puts on tight rubber gear and a platic bag over his head and has a great time with a tall, highly demanding dominatrix....... You can't really judge the guy and say he lives a boring existance and doesn't live.

I know him very well, I have been to his house (which didn't appear to have a dungeon ) ... met his wife, his daughter etc ... even she has told me that she wishes he was a bit more exciting/lively at times!!

He's a nice chap, don't get me wrong, but his totally selfless and plays everything totally safe and has no zest for anything in the slightest bit 'out-there' ... as I said, totally reliable and dependable, which are great qualities in a person ... but at times I just want to slap him!!!

At the end of the day, good luck to him ... I am not trying to say how he (or anybody) should live their life, but I just can't relate ....

its a good climbing video that. He killed himself doing some really stupid thing where he leaps off a cliff on a climbing rope- like bungeeing with a rope. i don't get soling either - its just like getting in a racecar without a seatbelt. pointless.

Quite. Also unless you are a complete nutter, then you would only attempt climbs you KNOW you can do ... where's the challenge in that?!?!

Anyway, back to this guy at work ... a group of us were having one of them 'If you won the lottery' type conversations over lunch ...

I opened the next thread of the conversation round the table with "so, you have 15million in your back pocket, what car would you go out and buy first?" Lamborghini, Ferrari, TVR etc came from the mouths of others ... I asked this dude ... he said "I'd probably just keep mine" (its an 02 plate 5 door Focus ... in green) ... I re-iterated the question ... "You have £15 million, you can have whatever you want ... what car would you buy ... you could have a dozen cars, one for every purpose ... but what's the flashiest car you would buy first off?!" ... he said "I'd stick with my focus" .... I just wanted to shake him!!!

So I'd guess you've never fired machine guns then , as to the archery, well a sense of power and control, perhaps a different sort of rush.

And yeah, climbing without ropes solo, although never at anything like the guy in the videos speed, but it's the "one step from death" thing mixed with the challange of the natural face in front of you (overhangs are the scariest and best), that gives you the buzz (already been called insane today, and that was for taking a walk ), used to run marathons as well, which is also a rush, pushing the body beyond it's limits, but then I've always been driven like than.

I suppose my view has always been if it looked fun I'd give it a go,if it looked scary, I'd take on the challange, if it looked stupid, I'd walk away.

The opportunity and physical ability to do a lot of this are now beyond me, and I've paid the price overtime for my choices, but don't regret doing any of it, all part of what makes me what I am.

Cheers Mark.
