Initially I thought so as well because what would be the point in having different software. But Suzuki has actually put different software on UK & US spec speedos... My bike was originally bought in Sweden and the speedo can not change between the units. A few months ago I bought a UK speedo to register my bike and sure enough that one could change between units. Suzuki has confirmed this as well.

I can understand the US version being different as I think a US mile is slightly different to a UK one.

Yeah I think there is a slight difference and there's also an irish mile and a scottish mile apparently!! They really go out of their way to do everything to make our lives more difficult!!

I've brought an SK5 in from France, and had the whole palaver with conversion to MPH. First off, I thought it would have the automatic conversion of the UK models, but I was sorely disappointed there. I tried sending the CoC off to the DVLA, but they bounced it straight back and said I needed a cert from the VCA.
I phoned the VCA for clarification, and they told me that all I needed to do was send in the parts receipts. Being an honest citizen, I purchased a used pair of headlights from a breaker, and got a Motrax speedo converter. Fitted the headlights and converter, stuck the MPH sticker on the speedo. Sent the receipts off to the VCA, and got the certificate back in a couple of days. So now it's back with the DVLA; hopefully I'll have a shiny new V5 in the next few days. But it is a mission to bring bikes into the UK from abroad - given that my mate in France told me that it's easy-peasy the other way... Cost so far: £75 for CoC from Suzuki, £70 to the VCA, £50 to DVLA (+road tax), £180 for parts. Time taken: over 2 months. Hair loss: untold! Maybe I got lucky; I checked with a Suzuki dealer and they said it would be £450-odd for a new speedo. And as my bike has less than 4000 Km on the clock, a second-hand one with similar mileage would be bloody hard to find, I suspect. Let's see what happens when its first MOT is due (June 2008...) ![]() What a pain though! 1 mile (statute or land) 5,280 feet 1.609 kilometers1 mile (nautical international) 1.852 kilometers 1.151 statute miles 0.999 U.S. nautical miles So there you have it. 1 nautical international mile=0.999 US nautical miles! Weird. I know we're not talking nautical but I couldn't find any difference anywhere else. If a mile was different in England to Scotland and Ireland then there are a lot of people out there with points on their license who shouldn't have! ![]() |

Except that an Irish mile may take longer to travel, but that's a different story... ![]() |

Tax disc turned up this morning - yay!
![]() Now I just need an illegally tiny number plate to fit to the undertray and clear the rear hugger.... For anyone out there faced with this issue, I'll list the steps that worked for me: 1. Write to Suzuki, requesting a Certificate of Conformity, enclosing the requisite payment (£75, in my case). If you phone them, they'll fax you the forms you need to fill in. 2. Get the National Type Approval cert. from the VCA, sending the CoC, receipts for any parts that needed fitting to meet Type Approval, and requisite payment (£70 - £35 of which is non-refundable if the application fails). 3. Once the NTA certificate arrives, send all the wads of paper you've amassed during this process to your nearest DVLA centre, with the requisite payment (£50, plus the road tax for your bike). 4. Sacrifice small animals to the gods of bureaucracy, pray and wait. With luck, you might take slightly less than the two-and-a-half months it took me! Ride free (once you've paid for it!)... |

Thanks guys, got a K3 and looked thru the handbook to find the way to switch between mph and km/h and it doesn't say how anywhere in the book. Though it wouldn't be too hard to guess how, thinking logically I suppose!
