There does need to be some life in the battery to operate the ignition, best bet is to just get a new battery, sometimes it can damage the alternator if the battery is realy low because its forced to work at maximum output to put some life back into the battery.

The tiniest amount of charge will give sparks, the ignition system is a very small electrical load, if the battery is low though pressing the starter button whilst pushing to turn it over will do more harm than good - what charge there is will take the low resistance path through the starter windings reducing that available for sparks and making starting less likely.
If you have an FI bike a push start is less often possible, the FI system is a higher current draw than the ignition is - a battery that's anything like flat won't have enough in it to pressurise the fuel system, so even if you can turn it over fast enough it's less likely to start. I thought the problem was it wouldn't start there can be enough juice for most things except headlights but not for starting...the same with a car!
It can light up like a christmas tree but not turn over! There is very rarely 'no' voltage whatsoever, if this is the case a new battery may be needed! Even if it starts or charges it will probably be knackered. Wots up with batteries these days...you just look at them the wrong way and they need replacing?? |
