When they are balanced properly your engine should have a nice harmonious song. When was the last time they were done. I've said before, it won't harm to have them done.
If you've done the chokes properly then they shouldn't need doing again, make sure you've put them back right and such. maybe check the plugs to see what its running..rich/lean.
I've said before if you have an air leak in a pipe, your bike pops n bangs like a trooper. Its very noticeable. Double check theres nowt blowing in that mangled mess on your downpipe!
Apart from that, I can't really help, cause I'm not there and somebody else will probably same I'm talking codswallop.
Can't say I've noticed an inconsistant spluttering on tickover, what tools do you need to balance them?
The exhaust does bang and pop on throttle off and the downpipe is blowing but I wasn't sure if this would make it run bad?
I did check the plugs but can't remember what I found, I'll recheck and I'll make sure the carbs are on tight while I'm down there. Choke plungers should be okay .
Cheers for your reply diz, given me sommat to think about.

you need a set of carb balancers (vacuum gauges)
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/DAVIDA-CARB-CA...1%7C240%3A1318
we've got these at home.
Is there anybody you know that could lend or do the job for you?

http://www.bikeguru.co.uk/carbs.html

it just so happens theres an article on line, got SV pics on it too, if it helps

I'll ask my local shop see if they have one to lend. Thanks for that dizzy If not it might be a pm to yc with promises of little pictures of the queen or beers-think he'll be more tempted by the latter...my drawings suck. That said I'm not 100% it actually needs it, I'll take it apart tonight and check the carbs and plugs etc and try and bung the hole in the exhaust properly, see if it makes any odds.

Bikes with carbs need balancing every so often. Think its every few thousand, can't remember off me head. I have mine done regularly. Plus the amount of jiggery pokery you've been doing I can pretty much assume that they've not been done in your life with the bike, and I seem to remember you saying it had been stood before you got it. Thing is, as well if you do get to balance them, and they refuse to balance then you know there might be something else you are missing. My yellow one wouldn't balance once, and we found there was a split in the rubber thingy that connects to the cylinder head.

Just pulled up my carbs to unseize the chokes (the bolt was seized but the plunger looked pristine hmmm, few scratches on it though) and check for leaks, it has revealed a shiny restrictive piece of ghey in each inlet.

No, I restricted it. The temptation is to whip the little rectums out.

I'm deciding against anyhoo, I haven't nearly enough experience.
