Dave, a water manometer is guaranteed as the most accurate way of balancing carbs. It has the added benefit of being the cheapest. They amount to nothing more than a few metres of tube hung from the ceiling with a small amount of water.

Hi matt cheers for the link, very interesting. The bloke in the garage said he'd do it for me aslong as he had the right attachment for his vacuum guage. Does anyone know what they are for the sv (1999)?
If not manometer here I come (I've got to say it does sound like a penis measuring device).

The fitting is a bog standard rubber tube that pushes onto spigots on the carbs.

Just set about cleaning my brakes, they deffo need a lot of bleeding there wasn't enough power in the pump to knock out the pistons and before I started I could pull the lever back to the bar.

Few quick questions though:
there are rusty marks on the pistons about 3-4mm down from the top, will this make any odds - do they even travel this far down?
How do I know my dust deals are shot? I take it they are pence? Should I just order a couple anyway - anyone know what to ask for?
My mate has some red rubber grease equivalent (F...numbers something or other) do I just coat the dust seal in this then rub it over the pistons?

Cheers

If that little patch is the worst on those pistons then I wouldn't mind polishing them up and using them on my own bike.

Did you notice the left piston?
Looks a bit dodgy to me, I was going to use fine wet and try on it to blunt it down then measure the depth of the caliper pots to see if it would actually travel enough to be a threat to my seals.
Any idea about putting the pistons back in? Do I coat them with the rubber grease, or copper slip, or nothing?

See if it will polish out, some autosol or brasso or something does the trick.

Make sure you clean all polish off with brake cleaner after.

Use rubber grease, put some in the seal grooves, install seal, press down on seals and wipe off excess. Smear a little round the pistons and install.
