Friend of mine had an Alfa Romeo 147, she's Italian and was trying to be patriotic, she sold it after 2 years complaining it was nothing but trouble. She drives a Mazda RX-8 now...

Actually, I had a 145 cloverleaf for a bit (http://www.alfa145.co.uk/) it was okay but I upgraded to a fiat coupe, 20 valves & 5 cylinders apparently. It was quite fast but had a tape player! The only cassette I had was a Howling Wolf tape & it seemed to suit the car perfectly. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fiat_Coup%C3%A9

Alfa is a lovely looking car and goes well when running-----------its just all the silly little things that go wrong with them that annoyed me.You can buy a fairly late model cheap, but as it is an expensive car new that should tell you something

Skoda octavia VRS (Alternate Golf GTi) Can be tuned to 600hp!!

Polo GTi

To be honest, if i had a choice at the moment, mine would be an oil burner of some kind.

Skoda Fabia, my other half has a 1.9tdi version and it handles well and goes like stink. Not a bad size either and made by VW.

Good call Viney, however unlikely to find a decent one for 3-4k. I am seriously considering the diesel Octavia VRS at the moment - 170bhp and over 40mpg. It will be around 50bhp donw on my scooby, and no 4wd but being able to get more than 200 miles from 60 quids worth of fuel would be nice

Get something like a corsa 1.3 diesel, if you really want an oil burner. I have a 525tds and it is not economical in the slightest, unless you drive it to the south of france at 80-90mph all the way when it really comes inot its own.

Around town it is rubbish, very comfy, but totally rubbish and burns way too much juice.

If I could persuade the missus I would have a small car which would save money all the way, tax, insurance and running costs. Especially as road tax is about to get worse......

What about a Toyota Starlet GT Turbo? 1.3 so cheap tax but easily tunable to 180bhp! Also has a switch on the dash between low and high boost - awesome fun little car

Ive just bought a UK 1.8 Mk1 MX5 - its great fun! No power steering came as a bit of shock though! Eek!
