Watching the Dutch play last night gave an indication why the game is so popular. It was a beautiful performance indeed. A talented Dutch side is nothing new, what we are yet to see is if the historical behind the scenes squabbles will yet again undo them in the end.

Portugal very strong, I cannot see how this Spanish side will finally put behind them a long history of under achievement behind them despite having some excellent players. They have been the most frustrating under achievers for many, many years.

Poor as they have looked thus far, rule out Italy at your peril. They are a brilliant tournament playing nation. They are though seemingly missing greatly their talismanic skipper Cannavarro who was injured in training leading up to the competition.

Me I am just enjoying it all tbh and have no real allegiance amongst those taking part.

Didn't think of that. Oh well, there's another hundred Sky channels to try. I'm bound to find something to watch to avoid the football.

Presently doing the rounds in honour of the self efacing Asturian David Villa is this chant here in Spain and at the matches:

(Pedant mode.....double "L" pronounced as a J)

Villa,Villa,Villa.

Es una maravilla.

(As near as damn translation...Villa is marvellous.)

Not got the out and out pace notr strength of Fernando Torres but this guy scores some incredible goals as well as the odd tap in.

He is by far THE best buy of anyone presently being touted as "For Sale" who presently plays in Spain. (That includes Ronaldinho...not had a good 90 minutes since pre World Cup 2006. Eto'o who just has bad attitude and once refused to go on to play despite being on the bench as sub. Deco, typical football playboy. Will get in to all kinds of trouble with refs in the Premier League due to his career long awful tackling.Plus he will p*ss many a player off as he never apologises no matter how poor a tackle has been.)

What you complaining about fella? He is "Portuguese" by convenience. Could never get in the Brazil team!

Ok so the final looms. Holland same old.same old. Peaked way too early. Russia tore the Dutch apart but evidently did not have 2 top games in them. The Turks so damned unlucky against the Germans. The French long past their best so many of their players. I would only give shirt to Frank Ribery. The Italians came in prancing due to their World Cup holder status, but did not bring enough game with them. Portugal massive under achievers with arguably one of the top 3 squads of players in the tournament based on talent.

You see this is probably the worst collection of German players that I can remember. So many living on past glories, never pretty to watch but they do have that German trait of not giving up.

Spain have brought to this tournament a sublime passing game a la Barcelona and boy can it work. They starved the Russians of possesion and marked a 3-0 win which should have been many more. Talismanic striker David Villa is out with a hamstring injury, but his replacement Guiza is the present La Liga top scorer and so no bum as a stand in.

So often the big tournaments see an eventual unpopular winner and so I fear that the Germans will do enough to disrupt the Spanish playing style and nick the trophy by the odd goal margin.

Spain though will not be disgraced at that, for they have now surpassed what any preceding national team that they have put together has accomplished for many years.

Win or lose I am sure that once again the streets will be full of cars, flags waving, people screaming and horns tooting......long in to the night.
