Just noticed this...it's not quite that difficult/random IMO - taking this as an example, you can "expect" (if that's the right word) a car to try and do a u-turn in a 2-mile long queue.

As you mentioned though, if the other side of the road is empty, I'd be right over there by the opposite kerb. It feels weird at first if you never do it, but I have to confess in all my life I've never seen a kerb pull a u-turn on someone and take them out.

Best bet is to always ride as far away from those moving objects as you can - junctions are another example, if I am coming up to a junction on the left, with a car waiting to pull out (left or right, but right is obviously a tad worse as there is less space to go into), I will move over to the right as far as I can - why give the car the opportunity to do something stupid, etc etc?

Another tip when filtering is to keep a close look on wing mirrors and front wheels. Generally when a car is going to do a U turn out of a line of stationery traffic the first thing the driver does is wind on a whole load of right hand lock. You would be amazed how easy it is to see a hand move in a mirror, the movement should catch your eye, and it's the first clue the driver is doing something, and obviously if you see a car with full right lock applied you are going to slow down, give them some room and cover the horn....aren't you?

Sorry to hear of your incident, Hovis. Hope it won't affect your
insurance too much.

I am not too sure about the legal position. If the driver admits his
fault it is all you need.

I was filtering past the same jam yesterday I think, closed road from the A470 to Caerphilly issue? A bint did exactly the same to me but I just stopped thank God. Stressed car drivers make terrible decisions. Hope you get it sorted soon.

Glad your okay H, very nasty that snarle up the other day, you may have passed me sitting in my car.

I'm not saying you did anything wrong H, I believe it to be totally the car drivers fault. I been involved one of these, I didn't fall off either, but it left me and bike embedded in a hedge the other side of the road. There are strategies that you can use to reduce the likelihood of an impact.

If there's nothing coming the other way use the opposing lane to best effect, get out well beyond the arc of an opening door. This occurs more often than the U-turn, just so the driven can stand up to see how long the queue is.

From this position you can see drivers right arm, if it's at or moves to the top of the steering wheel - more care needed. Look at the front offside wheel as Red has said. Drivers often give an instinctive shoulder check a microsecond before the U'ee, they look but don't see. Also be careful of the car that's moved well to the left (in the gulley) as this is often a prelude to the U'ee to ensure a 3 point turn isn't needed, this is a particular nasty "trap" as from a bikers view it looks like an invite to overtake.

Good luck with getting the bike fixed, certainly before September.

Double white lines where the line nearest you is solid. This means you MUST NOT cross or straddle it unless it is safe and you need to enter adjoining premises or a side road. You may cross the line if necessary, provided the road is clear, to pass a stationary vehicle, or overtake a pedal cycle, horse or road maintenance vehicle, if they are travelling at 10 mph (16 km/h) or less.

So, I read this as 2 mini-rules:

1) No crossing a solid line unless you are passing a stationary (i.e NOT MOVING AT ALL) vehicle. Even if its doing 3 mph you can't filter past it on the opposite side of the road if theres a solid line on your side. Expect prosecution.

2) No crossing a solid line unless you are overtaking a cycle, horse or maintenance vehicle IF THAT VEHICLE OR HORSE IS DOING <10mph. So you can't overtake a horse thats doing 30, say, even if you can smell its bum.

I know this has been done to death multiple times over the years but to me the rules are clear.

a) you can cross the white line by all means if its safe AND the traffic (queue) has STOPPED

b) you can cross the white line to overtake a road sweeper/gritter, horse or cycle thats going <10mph

otherwise stay put.

If you can get past without crossing the line do so, if not, again stay put.

You're not allowed to overtake anything you fancy a go at and cross the white line, even if its safe, it has to be a horse, cyclist, road maintenance vehicle or "stopped".

There. I feel better now.
+1 to this as me and a friend got pulled today for it TS20 coming on my licence soon. Now i wont be crossing any solid lines, lesson learnt the hard way
