How do average speed cameras work?

Don't forget that there are also CCTV cameras near the front-facing average speed cameras. I remember reading about someone on a bike who got done for repeatedly speeding through the M1 roadworks by an operator just looking at the CCTV footage to get the plate number.

This little ensemble has been knocking around here for a few months now, always had the rear facing camera (in one guise or another) but the foward facing one is an addition.




Anyone know exactly what the coo is? Presumably foward facing infra red to get you approaching or to indicate speed (little screen thing next to it?) and rear facing infra red, obvious, but what is that next to it? ANPR?

"Screen" may be a Solar Panel as a backup to charge a battery of sorts , the other one on it`s own with the dark lense has the appearance of a "Night" vision system looking at the coating on it

It also isnt biased in a downwards position so may be looking over the road , maybe at the junction on the brow of the hill .

I REALLY hope they don't pay much attention to the M62...

Thats an impressive amount of technology for making our roads safer. I wonder how ever will they recover the money for all this new equipment?

The amusing thing about the A24 camera set up is that only the foward facing is on test the rear facing is live! Lots of people think its the whole system!

ahh ok, sorry I thought it was going to be a total system I didnt realise that the middle one would be coming down.

I thought it from the photos that you'd have:
1st camera is a radar, to clock you on apprach (so you have no white line markers too break before)
2nd takes photos one 1 night vision and 1 in high colour
the 3 films for 10seconds or so after every picture just so they can double check the evidence in case of people contesting it a NIP.

I just stick to the limits in SPECS areas. I dont actually mind because everybody is sticking to the speed limits and driving at the same steady speed along an entire stretch, so they are the only speed cameras that don't aim to catch anybody out, only catch the odd idiot who decides to chance it so deserves a ticket anyway, and hence don't make any money, and they achieve the goal of improving road safety.

and they've just resurfaced that bit of road and not repainted the lines yet
