Computer start up times?

As has been said look at what your machine is loading on bootup and then go through it and stop as much of the stuff you dont need as you can.

Anti-Virus makes a big difference to speed of loading as well.

I've also found having the blue tooth enabled on my laptop when its booting slows down the start up tmie as well.

I was running XP on my previous laptop without a rebuild for over 3 years and its startup time never got slower. I am very careful about what I wil install on it and its OS build is pretty static...

Out of interest why is a Mac running Windows faster, that just dont make sense... Or we meaning Power PC type thing? Im pretty sure one of those would get spanked by a Core2!?

Building a PC from scratch yourself is the best way. No need to add RAM then... you got as much as you could want in the first place.

Water cooling is cool, but to warrent it you really need to overclock the comp to warrent the extra messing about and inherrant risks.

Fans might not cool the air but the airflow cools the heat sink. Saying that the heatsinks on both my computers are that big they take the micky dont really need fans, just like then to run cooler if I can help it.

One way to speed up start up is to get a nice Graphics card, you'd be amazed at the difference!!!! Think I might get a new one, the Nvidia 260 216 cards are looking good at the moment with price.

For the same spec'd machines; Apples run XP quicker as a general rule.

AVG is a bad choice i had it and it slowed my computer right down, My comp, My lappy, Dads comp, Dads lappy and Mums lappy all run norton and i think it is the best one out there.

My comp barely struggles with anything 2gb ram dual core AMD (i think of top of my head its a 2.3ghz) 512mb ati raedon card and start up is under 1min, my laptop on the other hand is rubbish now 512mb ram and 1.6 amd processor and it shows, some people seem to believe that service pack 3 on xp slows the computer down as a way of windows trying to get you to upgrade to vista, im not sure i believe this as much but im sure that my laptop has only just started being as bad as it is now and it wasnt that long ago i upgraded to sp3...

And use a controller. Pfff. Naaa. PC for games, much better. I have both, rarely go ont he Xbox. Besides Games look loads better on PC, load quicker etc etc.

This was the question that intrigued me last year. It turned out that it wasnt true in the end. I was pretty impressed with the performance of Vista on a top spec Macbook Pro but then a top Spec Sony or Dell laptop actually performed at basically the exact same level.

I ran various tests with Sysmark benchmarking suite and there was nothing between them really.

We actually ran a fairly extensive 'consumerisation' test in work where we have provided a test user group with a personal budget to buy what they like. We put constriants on the fact that they must also include a hardware support contract etc. Some went for Macs and love them, some went for PCs and also love them. Its a personal preference in most cases.

What OS do you have? Try emptying data onto an external harddrive, or installing another HDD to leave more space on the C: drive.

Running XP.. My disk is partitioned and there's like 18gb free on the Windows Partition as all my games, videos and music and the like have been installed onto the other partition

As not to derail this too much mine take 45 seconds (with 5 of that being OSX) - but I restart it about once every couple of months. Normally just put the lid down as sleep takes about 3 seconds.
