bummer - really sorry to hear about this guys - glad you're both relatively ok. Not your week is it? Have some kisses better, and some virtual beers to dull the aches xxxx

glad to hear your ok but take positive things from this and ask yourself is there anything you could have done to avoid this???
maybe not accelerating so fast if you dont have clear visibility of the traffic from the right. and remember for insurance purposes if you hit a vehicle from behind its your fault!
my advice is to settle with the van driver and maybe not lose your no claims

Unfortunatly, david is a good carefull rider...and cyclists really can be terrible. I had one flapping his arms at me this morning in the bus lane on the A41 when HE nearly rode into the side of ME. I had given him sufficient room (he was by the kerb when i went to overtake and i was by the white line) and sounded my horn. I wasnt going by very fast either, maybe 5mph differance

i think its just one of those things where you couldnt have done any more, like when someone U-turns in front of you and before you know it, your braking as hard as you can...

...sounds familier, what i just said. hmmm...

This law about hitting a vehicle from behind, surely theres a clause about how that driver in front got to be infront in the first place? like if they suddenly switch lanes and brake sharply, not giving the car behind enough room to brake in time?

A woman drove into the back of me at about 10mph, slow moving traffic downhill in Hendon (A41) let her go without even a warning. When i challenged them about this issue he said "not always sonny, just cos she hit you from behind dont mean you didnt jump in front of her and slam on your brakes, does it?"

Yes it was.

As stated, I was in a valid place to be - I was not undertaking as we had come round the corner pretty much together - I wasn't speeding as there were a bunch of cyclists to my left, doing the usual being all over the place thing that they do and the van was going slowly - I now know why.

This guy really did come out of no-where - no different from that SMIDSY car driver that u-turns on someone filtering, it just happens that it was to left rather than the right and he was on a push-bike.

Ah ha, thought so. Theres alot of stuff going on at the moment about those insurance scammers jumping in front of people, slamming on there brakes and claiming on insurance because someone went into the back of them, i guess they think that they are always the victim if someone goes into the back of them but im glad its not true

You'll appreciate the science behind this Matt... many years ago i read in the New Scientists how the police forensic labs could discover if a car that had been hit from behind had braked and if it had, had the brake lights been working or indeed had the driver used his handbrake to avoid the brake lights and hence cause the person behind to hit them.
Apparently under a scanning electron microscope the fillaments from the bulbs are studied and compared to lad smaples that have been exposed to air when on and off. Obviously they explained it a lot better than i just did, lol.
