What's this film about, roughly? I want to see it, but it's not that clear from the ads

A platoon of Jewish commandos who operate behind enemy lines in occupied France using guerilla warfare and brutality to insight fear amongst the German ranks.

Typical Tarantino, it jumps between a couple of seemingly unrelated personal stories, but it soon becomes apparent they are intertwined and will all come together soon enough. Less difficult to follow first time around than Pulp Fiction, though.

It's a combination of WW2 flick (with some ideas based on fact, although it's not historicallly accurate) and classic "revenge movie" themes. Although unusually, it's mostly about revenge on a racial*, rather than personal level. I think part of its appeal is that whilst the "good guys" do terrible things to people and in some cases, behave very dishonourbly, you can chuckle along sadistically without any guilt, because it's the Nazis who are on the recieving end.

* I think Tarantino originally planned this to be more apparent, as he hoped to include a platoon of black soldiers (who were supposed to be used as cannon fodder), who don't want to play ball and go rogue, but couldn't include it as the film was already too long.

Watched this last night. I enjoyed it, but no-way as much as I thought I would given what I had read on here. I thought the first half was great, but lost it's way towards the end. I wouldn't say I am or am not a Tarantino fan - I take each one as the come, but in my mind it isn't a patch on Kill Bill.

I only discovered it in a random interview that Tarantino did and even he said to the interviewer that no-one thinks about it and was impressed that he was been asked about it.

Look forward to the PM, dont go googling it now tho. That'd just spoil the fun
Update,
Had to order a new copy of pulp fiction as cant find vhs copy so will watch as soon as it arrives.
Im determined to find this info out, i was in the lake district last week, even tried to find a dvd store so i could watch it up there.

Ok so I finally got around to seeing this last night and have to say that T has certainly not lost his touch.

The cinematography was amazing, and not just part of the film, all the way through the film. The camera panning over the top of the rooms, classic T vision, the lighting was just superb and puts a lot of other directors to shame.

I would say though I am disappointed with the casting of Brad pitt in this film. There are so many other talents out there, T didn’t need Pitt´s name on this to make it a hit, and he isn’t quite of an age to do these roles as yet IMHO. Saying that, Pitt does do stupid remarkably well!

The format of the film in chapters I thought worked better in Kill Bill and this film didn’t need it at all. I was also slightly disappointed with some of the sound, I understand that he is trying to use his signature effects, however it´s a new film, I felt that it could have been an opportunity to try new effects out as well.

As always the story was told amazingly well, lovely references and fantastic supportive cast. Christopher Waltz certainly deserved his Cannes, best actor. His command of languages was certainly very impressive.

I agree with your comments; especially about the soundtrack as it definitely could do with a bit of refreshing. However, I do believe that Pitt was actually a very good fit for the role - I think I'll always remember his Buongiorno line Although must say that C Waltz was clearly the best actor of the movie!

I loved this film the GF did not at all!
I love Tarantino films but i have to say, even as an Anime lover* I just couldn't finish Kill Bill, maybe I was in the wrong mood or something but it's one of the few films I had to actually turn off.

*all my friends kept telling me I'd love it because I like Anime and it's like an Anime movie type thing....

I, thankfully, fell asleep after the first 30 mins and missed the middle hour.

I then spent the next hour trying to scoop out my eyes with a wooden spoon.

Apart from some decent acting by Brad Pitt, what a load of rubbish!

Kill Bill I got but QT has definitely gone over the edge. Serious medication and conselling required.
