I do think your employer has a certain degree of right to dictate what you do whilst they are paying you... however most employers, mine included, do make provision for you to access outside networks during breaks etc if that's what you want to do.
No one likes to be monitored and it's a shame it has to happen, but it is nice when you can get one over the monitors though. I spent the best part of several hours on the Gumball website recently and received a call from the head of the thought police who promptly launched into a lecture about how I shouldn't be browsing private matters on job computers, how he was going to let me off with "advice" this time, but he woudl be watching me in future. I let him dig himself in really deep then asked him if he was aware of my job description and had it occurred to him that perhaps if he investigated a little and actually asked some questions instead of relying on his box of tricks to do everything for him he might get a better idea of what his employees are up to. Strangely enough I haven't heard from him since... My point is that if your line manager needs to rely on monitoring your on-line activity to see if you're doing any work perhaps they ought to examine their supervision style? |

Anything that breaches your employers IT Useage Policy will cause you problems, punishment will vary depending on what you are caught doing.
Browsing the .org, probably just a talking to, downloading Copyrighted material, well as its the COMPANY, and not the individual that is held responsible for what happens on/from its network, you can imagine that the harsh penalties that they would receive would be passed down to you, probably be classed as Gross Misconduct and get you lobbed out the door... There is no requirement for your employer to give you access beyond that which you need to do your job, any useage for personal purposes is granted as a privilege and as such can be revoked. Thats it, plain and simple.
