because the OS uses some of its spare memory as a cache. For windows I'm not sure how much but it doesn't get reported under "commit charge" or "memory used" in task manager. So more ram = faster machine, even if the running programs don't use it.

as far as i know (which aint much) os uses spare allocated space on hdd as cache. this is used when all available ram has been used. its running processes that slow a machine down. the fewer background running processes the faster your machine. yes ram is responsible for making a machine faster but only if there is not enough in the first place. the largest bottleneck in a machine is the hdd. the faster you can transfer the data to and from the drive the faster the machine will be overall, gains in an hdd's read and write speeds will have a huge effect for instance a wd raptor with 10,000 rpm will give much faster throughput speeds than a 7500 rpm drive of the same type e.g. sata2 at 300 Gbit/s.

i dont see this ever increasing need for mega amounts of ram. yes its nice to have an application/game totally in ram space, but i'm afraid that the apps/games are not written that way as yet and as far as i know. just like 64bit apps/games there are not many out there so why use a 64bit os when it just defalts to 32bit to run the app/game.

If I was feeling rich id get an intel SSD. Only 120Gig for £250 but read speeds of 220MBs (fastest HDD are raptors at ~110MB's) and SSD's have no access time, which is again a saving on HDD's which average 8-9ms!

So yea bottle kneck is HDD but get a SSD and you will vastly reduce it.

ssd's are getting there and when they do i will invest in one as there are no mechanical whirly bits to go screeeech. the prices are coming down rapidly but still not low enough for my pocket.

only problem with ssd's is the space taking into account the average game take's at least 5gb if not more it'll soon go.

OS and games yeah, Media, Music, Films ect, use a normal Hdd untill they come down in price,
I have over 1500 GB of Blu Ray and xbox360 games on my PC so a SDD for all that is no good unless you are loaded lol .
