there were cars behind the lorry flashing their lights to try get his attention but we was already on the exit road so couldnt do much about it...

Sorry, but if I were in that car, there would be no way on this earth I would want to get anywhere near. I would have been just like all the rest of the cars behind the lorry. Staying a safe distance away.
