Would it be worth dropping the engine and taking both heads off and seeing which one is knackered or both are and then going from there? i could do that on a sunday. provided you have some good tools, as i have sold my car and no longer insured in anyone elses. i have some strong magnets somewhere so i can rip the oil filter apart, i dont think your going to be riding it much atm so emptying the oil isnt going to cause massive problems, and i do require beer money

Well, yeah anything to get the ball rolling would be great. I don't have any decent tools, but my neighbour will have, so I'm sure that won't be a problem. Beer money’s fine! (Praying you’re not a 30st alcoholic!!)

Every Sv engine I've seen blow from low oil ate it's big end bearing shells. Not that it makes any material difference.

bearing shells = big job isnt it?

YC do you think it would be a waste of time stripping the little ends back to see if there is a problem there or not? i mean its only a days work to do that and it might show blown pistons ring or something?

No job at all, it tends to score crank which makes it a paperweight. You can skim them but on the advice of people who know more than me I wouldn't do that.

Sure, you can have a look for nowt.

well if it is the bearings it means the engine is out and on the floor and we know the problem whereas atm he knows theres a rattle and it needs a new engine or a rebuild.

Isn't that normally when it gets to the terminal big end gone stage rather than the rattly stage though?

Is it worth looking *before* it goes properly pop or is it likely to have scored the crank already?

Fwiw its fairly easy to diagnose terminal big end damage without removing more than the spark plug and timing cap.
