And while in the area get to the Old Swan (Ma Pardoe's) in Netherton - the also brew their own. I heartily recommend their Bumblehole Manager won't take scottish money though

worst pint of real ale i've ever had was the blond beers, really really pale and taste of perfume, minging. ps the darker the better imo.

This is excellent advice! How very true.

Re the blond beers comment: A number of breweries have in the last year or two been making what tastes and feels somewhat like traditional bitters, but they have been specifically lightened in colour - they are intended to appeal to those people who would ordinarily drink lager, it's a deliberate attempt to sway the habits of people who wouldn't normally drink what's sometimes seen as 'old man's dark beers'. Generally they are quite light, again this is quite deliberate - if someone normally consumes the chemical cocktail masquerading as lager that's sold in the UK, something with a lot of flavour may be off-putting.

Mr Sid Squid. You are a danger to mankind. I remember an 'outing' where we consumed several pints of this thing called 'real beer'. It had quite an odd effect on me.
