Discos and the others like Fizz's Maverick are much better.

Not going to fall apart or anything, but you definitely get more for your money elsewhere with the early models.

For sure, you certainly can which is why Peg considered the Maverick before ours, also another CRV. A Freelander wouldn't be our first choice in choosing a car if doing it again, but for us it ticks every box for our growing family, and dogs.
It is widely known to be one of the best selling compact 4x4s in Europe. Personally I wouldn't know how it would pull a horse box, in fact Peg just said it has a two tonne limit. So perhaps not a good choice for the OP afterall.
A Maverick has one of 1.7 if he remembers correctly.

Not sure how old yours is Lou, but it's the Euro NCAP that made Land Rover have to completely overhaul the freelander. They got a massive amount of greif for the fact that the vehicle was being used by families to ferry children around when they were really not safe enough to do so.

I like the new ones, but pre 2002 I wouldn't touch if I was given one for free.

Ours is 2001. But in all fairness GG those scores in your link have 1 to five rating, with a 2002 sitting in the middle at three.

I know......I said I wouldn't touch a 1999 with a 10 ft barge pole. I think they started updating in 2000. Previous to that...terrible.

This is the 2007 J.D.Power table for 4x4, I think it covers vehicles up to around 3yrs old so 2004-7 more or less
