Cheers Viney, just strangely attracted to them and could see them being reliable..that was all I based that on!

Scanned autotrader and ebay, a few national dealerships and a few local and there's just naff all. seen quite a few good'ns but they're miles away, saw an ugly coloured astra in shipley (1.7cdi - group 4 insurance) but that's the closest I've got thus far.

golf gt tdi (or similar)...

like clarkson said about the vectra vxr "It feels as though this car was designed in a coffee break by people who couldn't care less"...

I had an astra sri courtesy car and it was dogshiit. Big time. Get yourself a golf tdi (one of the 140-ish versions will keep you entertained, or go mental and get one of the more powerful tdi's).

Failing that, did they ever make a 2.0 tdi focus with 130-140bhp? the torque will make journeys a lot less tedious and they handle well)

GT TDI's are too high insurance wise - seen **** loads of them buggers

Interesting on the astra front though.

I'm not too bothered about performance, let's face it I've been happy enough (ish) with a 1.4l 2 tonne tub of ****e! Economy , comfort and reliability over rule it!

+1 on the TDI golf, I've got the 110 hp version, it's no slouch and can do 50 mpg.
I might get a mild chip for mine, think it will be 140 then

Mines a mk5, but I also had a mk4 from new and put 50k on that with no issues at all.

The 110 hp versions like mine are about group 9 insurance, £115 a year tax, 50 mpg, why wouldn't you want one

Yeah mine just got past 50k and it failing!
Group 9 is the only issue in the above, but the non 110 ones are an acceptable group...going to go see if they're affordable

very interested in the SE TFi's (mk5) Just rang insurers and it'll up it £300 p/a but I reckon the saving on fuel will far exceed that seeing as I'm getting about 200 miles out of a full tank on this ****bag
