I'm at work at the min so can't really go into depth but ill drop a post or pm later regarding jail breaking.
As for your issue with the slow new os, I haven't updated my self yet as I have been really busy and not had time to investigate.
But for your issue I would first backup your device and then do a restore with the correct .ipsw
is it 5.0.1 your on now ?
I know iOS 5.1 beta 3 was released to developers the other day so it wont be long now till its released and it may fix the bugs within 5.0.(x)

And this is how most of the products end up with bad rep.
I recommend both apple and android devices based on the users technical knowledge and requirements.

also you spout off about android but do you tell the users that 70% of the apps are rouge ?
do you tell the users that they will most likely never get an official update for there device unless they root it ?
do you tell the users that they if they don't be careful what they install there battery life will just evaporate and grind to a halt ?
I could go on all day.
Chill my friend

1st point I think ALL tablets are a waste of time/space/effort

2nd You make my point PERFECTLY.

My stance is due to people buying blindly, not looking for or seeking advice, but going for the shiny.

I'm not trying to tell people not to buy Apple - I am just trying to make sure people think about these things, things that they wouldn't think to ask or consider normally because they are NOT that interested, they just want something to play music on ir make calls etc.

As for rooting on Android, more and more manufacturers are making it VERY simple to access the bootloader etc - Sony Ericsson for one, which will, I think be the start of the floodgates.

The reason for delays/no-shows in the Software Update schedule is mainly because of the way manufacturers customise the Android Version on THEIR phone, meaning that with each Android release they have to then re-do or check that the customisation shell they put on the last version still fits/works with the new version (I appreciate you know this already Hindle, but this post isnt just a response to you.

As for 70% of apps being rogue - where did you see that figure? (Genuine curiosity, not challenging your figures).

Sure that is a downside of anyone being able to release a piece of software, but the upside is that for no cost at all I or anyone with a little skill (like me ;P) can release an app.

So sure the signal to noise ratio can be a bit low, but there is a wider array of apps on the Android Platform than on the IOS one, purely because the coders are not allowed to make certain kinds of apps on the iPhone, certainly nothing that will harm the Apple or their Partners Revenue Streams.

Pete

If you wanted to buy a brick, why did you not go to you local builder yard?

sorry cannot help. don't do fruit and berries here. Although an ice cream sandwich might be tasty once I have finished with my gingerbread

I'd rather pay a fortune for a brick than entertain operating systems with overtly camp nicknames like "crispy fondue", "fluffy dingo" or "angle delight dado rail".

Yeah I understand this and we both agree but that doesn't go for all users there is still a huge amount of technical savvy users who buy apple devices over android.

I'm not trying to tell people not to buy Apple - I am just trying to make sure people think about these things, things that they wouldn't think to ask or consider normally because they are NOT that interested, they just want something to play music on ir make calls etc.

Most of your points are valid but most people read your posts will be put off by apple and go buy an android device where they will then be in too limbo as they don't have the technical know how to protect them self or diagnose their device when its clogged up with poor apps (that uncle joe developed in his shed) that drain all the devices resources.

As for rooting on Android, more and more manufacturers are making it VERY simple to access the bootloader etc - Sony Ericsson for one, which will, I think be the start of the floodgates.

floodgates of noobs bricking their devices ?

The reason for delays/no-shows in the Software Update schedule is mainly because of the way manufacturers customise the Android Version on THEIR phone, meaning that with each Android release they have to then re-do or check that the customisation shell they put on the last version still fits/works with the new version (I appreciate you know this already Hindle, but this post isnt just a response to you.

and this is the problem there is so many manufactures using the android platform no one can keep up with the changes leaving people on old firmware and open to vulnerabilities more than ever.

And this brings me to my next point, every one caters for apple devices and some of the accessories made by third parties are amazing your quite restricted with android devices and accessorises as there is so many different types of hardware.

As for 70% of apps being rogue - where did you see that figure? (Genuine curiosity, not challenging your figures).

I don't know the percentage of the apps within the official store but after a meeting with my web-root business account manner we got into a little conversation and he stated that 7/10 apps they tested had some form of data privacy threat.
Ill try and get some documentation from him next time we talk.

Sure that is a downside of anyone being able to release a piece of software, but the upside is that for no cost at all I or anyone with a little skill (like me ;P) can release an app.

And that's where the security issues come in, you got a user base which covers half of the market share where anyone can upload an app that has the potential to compromise your device.
for tech users who know what to look out for this is fine but for like likes of many they are just walking into a mine field.

So sure the signal to noise ratio can be a bit low, but there is a wider array of apps on the Android Platform than on the IOS one, purely because the coders are not allowed to make certain kinds of apps on the iPhone, certainly nothing that will harm the Apple or their Partners Revenue Streams.

that's where the jailbreak scene comes in, and I think given the chance you would actually like it.
me and you have talked about the hacking ps3's xbox's psps ect ect ect and I'm sure given the chance I could change your mind on a few things.

Normal users will find the apps store to have everything they need.

one other thing I will throw in is that owning an apple devices allow me to update my hardware every year or two with only a small price left to pay once I have sold my old hardware for more than half of what I initially paid for it.
Android devices depreciate rapidly and after 18 months the device you paid £400 for is worth next to nothing.

Luv ant x

Haven't read all of the posts here but I would recommend a fresh install.

I had beta versions of iOS 5 while it was in the making and it will get better. Stick with it. Ios 5 is so much better than 4.

Also do your self a favour and check out the basebands for the firmware you are on now and the one you want to go back to.

Can't remember the software you need from Cydia... Although that particular software doesn't always work anyway..

Stay with iOS 5... It's easier
