3 years as far as totting up points towards a ban is concerned.

I had to attend a speed awareness program in Germany years ago. They showed video footage of kids with heads missing etc having been hit at various speed over the limit. It was a gory version of the recent campaign on TV where they used special effects. Anybody leaving early or refusing to watch were banned unless they re attended.

That experience changed my attitude to speeding in built up areas.

It is simple physics, on momentum alone it takes you twice the distance to stop @ 42.5 mph then @ 30 mph and that is best case scenario.

@ 30 mph you may scrub enough speed off to avoid or at least only injure the 3rd party, @ 45 mph it is straight to the scene of the accident.

Just because a kid should not run into the road does not excuse an accident if you are speeding, the speed limit is set @ 30 mph based on the fact some little fecker might (i had a couple of close shaves in my youth )

Don't mean to sound preachy but those are the facts, it is not about what did happen or what is happening on the road but what might happen. I am no angel when it comes to speed limits but I obey the 20, 30, 40 very carefully.

Remember you can always afford to get there late compared to the alternative.

Any kid that's doing 20mph should be out training for the Olympics, not getting run over. Is it any wonder we can't even win our own tennis tournament!!

When i was a kid we went to the fair on the bus .
Peter wone a gold fish . and at 7 Thats an exciting thing. .
His mum Watson the opposite side of the road.
So he crossed not looking properly due to that excitement.
If the car had been doing 30 . I believe he would be hear today .
We need to be responsible adults .

All been there, I was caught (in the car) by a camera in a van that had been set up in a layby after a two lane uphill section of an A-road in Cornwall, I put foot down to overtake a lorry (tis why the lane is there!) and saw the van as I crested the hill, turned the air blue.

Still I was lucky enough to be offered the course, what pee'd me off on the course was the number of people that were indignant about being caught I was just happy to have the chance to take the course and not get 3 points.

This one silly moo complained that they should not have put the camera at the bottom of hill as people are always going to speed going downhill and that anyone who crosses at the bottom of a hill does so at there own peril!

I had done the crime so I did the time and I did learn from it.

That's the trouble with just giving points for more 'serious' speeding people will not learn from it I think the offer of a course for a first offence should be mandatory,
