Funny as you say to see people getting themselves worked up. A few people need to take a 'simmer' pill or two :P

Your criteria for the study subjects sounds good to me. Quick and easy to weed out the not-suitable eh....

... and judging by the responses here it's quite easy to work out which won't look beyond the end of their noses and who's opinions aren't worth listening to so can be rejected.

Anna has it totally sussed.

Let me guess, you are one of the highly strung ones? Never really worked which ones were but thanks(assumming my guess is correct).

You have a right to an opinion so can't argue with that but remember

How did I get into bikes?

The smell of 2 strokes, the feeling of freedom and individuality...............and of course wearing leather....

I got into bikes because my dad had bikes when I was a kid and I much prefered going out and cleaning his bike to playing with my dolls house

It's just great fun and all the people I've met through bikes (including my husband) have been the nicest people you could ever wish to meet. I've been riding bikes for a little over 12 years now and still love it. I do get a lot of the 'That's a big bike for a little girl' and 'Is that your bike?' sort of comments but I just get on with it and enjoy the ride

Ok so my preliminary findings are thus

Not in any particular order:-

- Biker Chicks are different to your stereotypical girl, this is self confessed and some are proud not to be ‘one of the mold’
- Biker Chicks can still be feminine, however some like/admit the fact that they are not 100% girly girl, it gives them an identity.
- Biker Chicks are quite feisty and defensive – probably largely due to being involved in a male dominated sport/hobby and all the s3xist remarks they are up against on a daily basis (Is that your bike?!?! Is that not a bit to big for you?? A girl on a bike?! They way they get ignored in bike shops Etc etc).
- Some are content within themselves and the slightly ‘oddball’ persona being a biker chick gives them, they don’t fight it, if anything they use/embellish it; others fight it tooth and nail and want to be seen as a stereotypical girl!!
- Biker chicks are generally born when they are brought up around bikes, or if they are simply into the freedom horsepower gives them (i.e. developed from equine interest).

Some of the above I have taken literally from the wording of our female posters, some I have deduced from reactions.

Thanks for you input (in reverse order of appearance ) Amanda M, Bullwinkle, Paws, ED, anna, need2ride, CoolGirl, RizlaSV, K, Ping.

As a final note … what many seem to have missed is that I am imploring biker chicks!!! Don’t be so darn defensive woman!! I love you all

Ed is a bloke, e.d. is a girl (although it took me aaages to work that out haha)

Just for the record, I really don't like girls in high heels, with long nails, that talk about "celebs", with big earings and hairspray fringes, they do absolutly nothing for me, this is what I really like:

I have NEVER had a wardrobe full of shoes or handbags, cant walk in high heels, my nails are short and my house is a mess, I dont talk about washing powder or cooking BUT Im still feminine.

So PLEASE any girls that are like this don't change, and stay like that being an actual fun, practical member of the oppostie sex!

I see why the question could annoy people... But here's a different way to look at it.

Nobody ever asks David Beckham why he started playing football, but I bet Birgit Prinz (FIFA Women's World Player of the Year 2003, 2004 and 2005) gets it just about every interview. David Beckham probably wouldn't even know, it was just a given that he'd play football being a boy. Even I played football, and I hated it Boys just fall into football without trying, girls need to want to play.

Turn it around. Why did Andrian Fadeyev take up ballet? I bet most people assume he's gay. It's a very unusual choice for a man. It takes that much more determination and passion to get through that prejudice.

Extremes there, maybe, but the same applies to biking I reckon. A lot of folks start out on scooters, and that's definately a teenage boy thing. Most existing bikers are male which puts an obstacle out there- when i decided to get a bike I had a dozen riders to speak to, and all were encouraging and enthusiastic. I'd expect if a new female rider was to speak to a dozen male riders they'd get a lot of patronising answers and unhelpful comments. If they did it in a shop, what are the chances they get pointed towards a Virago instead of an R1, even now? And when I got it, all my friends were "Nice bike"- A lot of women would respond "Why did you get a bike"

The huge majority of the biking heroes are men... Most bike journalists are men. Most bike designers, too, and shop assistants, and instructors. And an awful lot of all of those are going to be chauvinistic knob-ends.

I reckon the question's not so much "Why would a girl want to ride a motorbike" it's "What made you, specifically, decide to get through all that crap that I never had to deal with?" You don't ask David Beckham why he got into football, because the answer'll be boring. But Birgit Prinz probably has more interesting reasons. Ask 20 guys "Why did you get into biking" and chances are you'll get a load of uninteresting answers.

I reckon it's the same reason that so few female riders are rubbish. Guys often seem to just wander into biking, girls tend to- probably need to- want it more, and take it much more seriously. It's a cliche, but almost every female rider I've ever watched properly has been better than me. Literally every female rider I've ever seen at a trackday makes me look like a snail, where I'm probably midfield with the guys in intermediates.
