MS DOS is a crap operating system. Crap. Its that simple. It has a good user interface making it easy to use namely "Windows"; but that doesn't stop the OS being rubbish.

Its this bleeding GUI install that Ubuntu have just come out with, that seems a bit buggy. It is a mistake that they are pushing it so hard, and calling the ordinary one "alternative", but its the way it is.

When John gets a kernel loaded, and X started, he will have not only an unquestionably far superior operating system running, he will have a pretty nice GUI running that will allow him to use a huge amount of this OS off the bat too.

True, not any more. Windows 98/ME was the last OS to run over MS-DOS, since then it moved to NT and MS-DOS is run on top.

Nothing wrong with DOS, had a lot of bugs but was probably one of MS's better products, shame it did stay that way. All so that IBM's PC could have a OS... and MS was born.

And I'm running Ubuntu, just for your info:

Code:
daniel@grinch:~$ cat /proc/version
Linux version 2.6.15-27-k7 (buildd@terranova) (gcc version 4.0.3 (Ubuntu 4.0.3-1ubuntu5)) #1 SMP PREEMPT Sat Sep 16 02:35:20 UTC 2006
daniel@grinch:~$

More likely cheap CD's or an old drive.

I never have any issues with DVDs or CDs. Admittedly i did with my DVD drive initially but that was a firmware issue

Rubbish. Each Os has its bonuses. I've used and continue to use both for there most appropriate tasks. For the average home user Windows is the way to go for software and ease of use. Few "average people" can justify the extra complexity of Linux. For help on Windows he probably knows enough or perhaps has a "mate". For help on Linux he has to ask a bunch of techies on the internet.

I hate this OS argument. No one is willing to back down on the "mine is better" crap.

IMO if he cant get on with Linux or get it installed, its not appropriate.

Nope. The ubuntu installer has a CD verification function, and it verifies fine. So it's not the cd.

Didn't have access to the cd burner last night so I tried some of the other functions on the ubuntu disc. None of them work!

Sorry, but people go on about linux being fab. I believe them, but if I can't install it then it isn't that much use is it.

pwned Seriosuly, if you're getting burn errors in Windows you should treat it like you would any other error- it's not Windows causing it, it's your software, your burner or your discs. I've burned hundreds of CDs on my last 2 without a single write error, at top speed and while running other apps. Windows has a lot of problems, but I don't see that this has ever been one of them.
