He's right you know.

Its really doing my head in . . . im just going to buy new everything and change it all, ( including that poly 26 Bellypan Kwak thanks for that looks mint )
My usuall Guy who spanners my bike has gone AWOL so im going to track him down and do the lot for me including a service. he worked as head mechanic for like 20 years or so and is excellent

So i need:

New fork oil, ( heavier ) possible Ohlins springs too
New engine oil 10/40W
new brake fluid
new brake pads
new inddys

Poly 26 belly pan - can i get that already in K5 red?
tail tidy
R&G crash bungs - these are all purely because i wanted them for ages

And let him just get on with it

And for my own stupidity,
i will be investing in a Haynes basic engine guide
and the SV 2005 service manual
i will have to learn learn ! ! !

And I'll back that up... That's how hydraulics work, based on the pressure remaining constant as long as the it doesn't empty the reservoir, and the fact that you can't compress the liquid (as long as there's no air in it...)

Well put by the way Jambo...

Mate, some good advice has been offered here, it's not just a case of "bolt new things on", I would strongly recomend someone looks over the bike. Many of these things may not need replacing, just adjusting and checking. A day's help from someone who knows what they're doing will be worth it for the piece of mind as well as the bike feeling better.

Changing fork oil, and brake pads is not hard, but it's a bit of a step up if you're not used to working on the bike at all. The potential is there for you to make a mistake and cost yourself a chunk of money or get hurt. I for one don't learn all that well from books, but if I'm shown something I tend to remember it. Once you've done a few things yourself you'll find your confidence builds up but if you try to put all this lot right on your own I'd imagine it could be frustratingly difficult.

Good luck getting it sorted mate, don't vex there's nothing there that can't be spannered right

I would have offered to help if you were going to tackle it yourself (it being a Red K5 'n' all). However I think getting someone proper to do it is really a better idea given the scope of the required works and the fact that safety systems (brakes) are involved.

On the hydraulics thing I agree with Jambo - though I could never have put it so well.

Something else to consider \ back Jambo up \ disprove Baphs comments about force \ generally useless info..., in response to Baphs comments about force...
An appropriate equation for this situation is:
Force = Pressure x Area
Now the pressure in a hydraulic system may be considered to be equal throughout (gravity will have a miniscule effect on a system such as a bike's brakes) therefore the only thing that can change the force applied to the brakes is a change in the ratio between the area of the master cyclinder piston and the area of the brake caliper piston, and that ratio isn't going to change in a system such as this.

I think you're confusing things you'd like to do to your bike with things you need to do for your bike. I'd worry about the mechanical defects then think about the visual mods.
