Re-tightened the spark plugs, lubed the chain, then a test run up to Glossop, down the Snake Pass, past Monsal Head down to Bakewell, then through Buxton and up over the Cat & Fiddle home.

Everything seemed OK but I'll probably need another test run tomorrow

Thought my rear caliper had seized Friday night on the way home from work, so had it off today, turns out the rear piston side pad had delaminated, luckily there were a few little fragments of pad left which stopped me wrecking the disk. Cleaned the caliper up anyway. Sorry for the huge image!

OEM pads, they're six years old and have been in for 25,000 miles so that might have something to do with it. It was just quite sudden, one minute the pad was there, the next the lever went to the stop, no warning.

It nearly happened on my last SV with OEM pads, 5 years old and in for 30,000 miles, but luckily I caught them in time when I noticed that the pad material was starting to break up and chunks were falling out and replaced them.

I only really use the rear for hill starts, sitting stationary, slow first gear corners or occasionally to smooth braking with a pillion, so they don't wear out. Both my SVs have been second hand so I guess the lesson is to change the rear pads when I buy a new bike then every few years or so after!

Still odd. My pads just usually wear down to nothing. Never had a separation. Contamination maybe.

My tinkering for today was bump starting ☺ . Bikes not been used for a couple of weeks and its been quite cold (it lives outside under a cover). 4, 5 second prods of the starter resulted in a flat battery. Hopefully getting it over to a mates garage for winter storage tomorrow. Will also do some tinkering while its off the road (twin exhausts, service front forks and repaint legs, service etc)
