I have passed my IAM & am starting observer training. In my experience I had a different observer every month, so no risk of suffering all the way through with someone I didn't get on with, and TBH I think I learned something new from every single one over the year and don't have any recollections of any that stuck out as people that I didn't get on with.
Fizz, that's a real shame. It doesn't sound likely, but could the trainee have asked his observer for some help re the toolkit? Anyway I'm sure you're big enough & ugly enough to turn round to him & say, look I'm not interested can we just get on with riding. It's certainly not part of the syllabus to go into that much detail. All that's required knowledge is the pre ride checks in 'POWDERS'. Oh, never seen a pipe or slippers in my group, but Dayglo is quite popular with them (and me!) |

Hey I went from a 125m I which owned, via DAS GS500 to my SV....
When I first sat on my SV, I was very nervous I was scared of droping my really cool shiny bike, which I love. This passed quickly, now I'm thinking of other things when I ride, don't trust anyone on the road either! How many miles/hours riding have you done? I would go with the others just ride and ride, it will come don't force it. Choose quite time to get out on the road. Also a quite car park, pratices riding slowing, turning right, turning left, moving off. I did that when I was going for test I would spend hours riding figures of 8, u-turns on the 125. PM if you the want the detilas of who taught me, they are very good and will help but they are in North London. If you around next week, Monday/Tuesday I'm off work I will meet you in Watford if you want to go a for ride. I'm not the most experined person riding less than a year, but I will ride with you. Let me know if you want to do this. |

It is all relative though Chris, to somebody coming off a CG125 (or indeed a Bandit) where the throttle is very forgiving and big sudden throttle movements have little or no consequence, the SV will seem snatchy, until the rider gets used to having to be gentle with it. You'll find most 16 & 17 year olds think nothing of giving thier bikes full throttle just to get though an orange traffic light

Clodge; you may qualify for Soho Massive membership - as such, you could be entitled to some supervision and tips on how not to crash from the crashiest group of them all!
What specific area's would you like to improve? The sorts of things you are saying (covering rear brake etc) are all very good (I cover my rear brake) but you are still riding to pass a test - you've passed the test, and now your riding needs to evolve to suit you and to suit the real world, where nobody drives or rides to test standard (its true). I wonder if TWO's journos have all just come of 125's 'cos I was thumbing through our four pages in the supermarket tonight and noticed they made a prominent comment on the "snatchy throttle". They weren't very complimentary at all actually I thought, cr@p brakes, cr@p suspension, cr@p finish.... Thanks, lets see your opinion on any other large capacity £4k bike, oh yeah, forgot, the ER6-F is 500 quid more with cr@p brakes, cr@p suspension, and cr@p finish and the rest are all chinese!
