The sound goes away even if you stop accelerating and you don't pull the clutch.
Well in my case the sound comes when: 1. must be in gear 2. clutch is fully released 3. have to accelerate. 4. speed more than 40 kmh I have not tried yet to go with 60 - 70 kmh and put the gearbox to neutral and release the clutch... but I will do that to. |

Today in the small amount of time off i've had, been out tinkering again. Disconected the ignition retard just to rule anything simple like that. (you can live in hope). No difference what so ever. Any difference in response-hard to tell in such a short journey. I'm kinda residing myself to the fact that it might be gear box so am just gonna try and live with it. Thats unless some 1 manages to source and resolve the dam noise

Has anyone who has this problem tried checking for cam shaft run out?

Dizzyblondes whine is definately in the front head. Cam runout is the next thing to check when I can beg/borrow/steal some V blocks and a dial gauge.

Apparently the cam shaft can actually be bent by excessive reving!! I haven't personally but the bike made the noise when I got it and you never know what the previous owner got up to.
To answer 999s question, runout is basically checking how strait a shaft is (stop that giggling at the back). If the camshaft is not perfectly strait it will place load on it's bearings. I really really hope this is not the answer though. I will be checking my valve clearances soon, so I'll check while I'm at it. |

I don't excessively rev my bikes, I've had it three years. Neither has the previous owner.........because it was my other half. My problem with whine has only recently started, after a year of very little use. My other half can't understand it, as its never done it before until a couple of months back, I thought I was hearing things until he said...."have you heard that whining"

My only other guess would have to be oil starvation, are there any common trouble spots that anyone knows of? Has anyone with this problem done an oil pressure check and are there any potential problems that the warning light might fail to indicate?
This idea could tie in with why DB found that an engine flush made a temporary improvement. I'd be tempted to have a look at the oil strainer but it means splitting the crankcase. I think my plan of action will be, crankshaft runout when I check the valve clearances, then an engine flush, then a pressure check and then if still no joy, it's major strip down time. Or I could just wait and see if one of you figures it out and save a lot of hassle. Last edited by shifter; 20-03-08 at 10:55 PM. |

Well done a few miles on the ole gal today. Whine is there in all gears. Other problems to note. gave it some revs with the clutch pulled in. How suprised was i when bike started to creep. not resolved by lever adjust. Back off with the sprocket cover. Planning on buying an original front sprocket to just to eliminate non damped noise.AAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHH

Right then first what sort of noise is it? Is it like a whine the VFR's make from their gear driven cams, or a wistle kind of sound?
My SV never made any whine sounds but the Falco does. Basically all this is down to is the gear driven parts of the engine of which there are a lot. The Sv has generally quiet gears in the engine but there is a chance that the gears are a little noisy and put out a whine. Id say its nothing to worry about. Get out and ride it ![]() If its a wistle kind of sound then look into the Suction tubes and maybe even look if one of the rubber nipples have come off. Does it seem to effect performance at all? |
