Ha ha, yep I had me one of those... Took 4 months, only used the damn thing for about 30 hours tops. Sigh. Sent to Germany came back and draw didnt work right as the eject switch on the new Mobo was a bit crappy, sprayed some WD 40 and a month later that started working. Seems pretty happy at the moment.

Only really play Motogp2008 on it at the moment.

Corrected for you Jamie

I rebuild when it's the quickest way to fix an issue or a corruption, and thats a sledgehammer to crack a nut (lazyness and time saving really!), but never due to poor performance.

It is true that over a long time Windows and particularly applications, get more demanding in terms of CPU, RAM, etc as versions are upgraded and service packs, patches, etc applied, so a PC thats a few years old may not run as quick as it did on day one, but it's not the same versions of software, so not comparing apples with apples. It's only because the demand begins to exceed the capacity.

If you have sufficient capacity to run what you are trying to run (even if that means 10% utilised the day you buy and 70% 4-5 years later), then regular maintenance and don't install anything you don't need (and don't feck with it!) and your PC will run sweet. Of course if you buy the cheapest laptop thats 50% utilised on day one, you hit problems sooner.

Also user perception is key, if you give someone a new PC and it takes 1 minute to boot, they think it's great 'cos the old one took 3 minutes, but six months later still 1 minute or thereabouts, and they moan that it's taking ages 'cos thier expectations have changed.

About 30 seconds from pressing button to being able to use it.

CCleaner's a great tool, it not only helps trim the fat (and mine took 150 registry entries out of a brand new install the other day) but it also has a nice startup utility which makes it easier to control what loads when you start up (yes, you can do this manually but this is easier)

Mine takes about 30-40 seconds I reckon, never timed it. But it's reasonably pokey.

More fans = same air at lower speeds. Mine has... Uh, 5 120mm case fans and a big un, 140mm I think it is, plus an extra 80mm exit fan and the CPU fan, and the 2 80mms on the GPU... But they all run at 7V or 5V so they're essentially silent, and they shift the same amount of air (Q6600 at 3.4ghz, nice and cool despite the overvolting it needs)

How on earth do you fit all that on!?

I got 2 cases, First has 2 120mm case fans and oe blowing on my graphics cards (they are that crap they over heat if not, might be replacing soon!!!). Spec of that comp is;
-Q6600 @ 3GHz
-Asus P5E
-2GB PC8500 1066Mhz
-Crossfire 3870's (IE 2 working together).
-few HDD

2nd case has 4 120mm fans inc CPU fan;
-E6600 @ stock 2.4GHz
-Asus P5W DH Deluxe
-2GB PC8500 1066MHz
-9800GTX
-Few HDD again.

Both run very cool and arnt really loud at all. Need to look at upgrading the 2nd computers CPU and Mobo really, getting old now. Like 3 years old. ha ha.
