How about "because we can". I reckon it is a lot more fun riding a slow bike fast than trying to hold a tiger by the tail.

I have about $2500 in the suspension... and it still has the original upper and lower legs. In a drag race it'll still lose to just about everything on the road, but on a lumpy track it is a good number of seconds faster. The extra corner speed had it climbing all over the back of the faster bikes in the tight sections after getting blown away on the straights so in real terms it is not really any slower. On the road the suspension work has translated into a better mannered bike.
No engine or exhaust mods although I have picked up a few bits to play with when I get the time.

I started with an SV because I wanted something that would do about 125, weighed about 160 - 170kg, and had a power delivery that I could use on some bumpy narrow lanes often in the wet and with gravel strewn about, (and cost less than my mates Aprilia 550).

So far my pointy has a GSXR front end including master cylinder, an Ohlins shock, and Renthal bars with an Enduro headlight. The engine is standard but using a K&N filter, M4 system mated to a Leo Vince can and a PC3 with custom map and quick shifter. Makes 75 at the rear wheel which is plenty fast enough thank you. Still working on ways to get the weight down but that's going to be expensive....

It beat my mate first time out and since then he's blown his engine (and I'm still feeling smug about it......!)

Just go to engine work carbs and FI section and read all threads. There is lots of chat about reliability at certain power etc. Better for you to see many points of view than me to just tell you something.

Important thing to remember for your academic studies is 90% of biking public are clueless and fit bolt on crap that does nothing for performance.

Like NC35 carbon air tubes?

Which are heavier than the original plastic ones...

Yup pretty much, but at least you've got the engineering noddle to know that stick on carbon crap on your top yoke will increase rigidity by at least 200%
