You know what's killer too.. After all this SV talk. I went down to check out another one.. And there, a 09 orange GSX-r600 was sitting there. only 778 miles on her and he was asking 7,999$..not bad, when they normally go for 10K+. The SV was going for 7,400$.. Ahh, choices...What do you guys think? I know it's my choice, but im having a hell of a time.

After your experience on the 250 I don't think the jump in performance would make you a total liability.

I went from passing my test and not having a bike for 5 months, straight onto a 95bhp '98 Yamaha Fazer 600, and it was perfectly fine for me. Also my friend got his test then got an SV650s as his first bike and it was fine for him too, in fact 2 years on and hes still loving it. All goes down to how sensible you are on it, and whichever you prefer the look of, so i'm sure you'll be more than grand

Go for it if you want - you're the one in control, the bike only does what you tell it to do. It'll just cost a bit more to run, and will be a different ride to the SV. (I don't mean suspension, that will be better than SV) The SV engine isn't massively powerful, but is torquey and has a flexible character. GSXR600's apparently aren't like that. If I get near enough to one I might find out!

My doubt would be - why has it only had 2-3 months of Sunday's riding? Has it had the speedo off and been round a track, or was it just someone who couldn't get on with it? If its from a dealer, even 2nd-hand, you possibly could get a warranty of some kind. I had a 6-month warranty on my SV. Stick a shed-load of miles on it to break anything within the warranty period!

Best bet - TEST RIDES! If they want your money, and you have a license, they should give you a test ride. No test ride - no sale. Make your money work for you!

Thanks, what you say makes a lot of sense. Prob some of the best advice i've gotten.
Will it cost more to run the GSXR? Does it take diff gas?

I went from a 125 to a SV, then to a GSXR 750.

I think that whilst only you can make the choice, lots of people go from passing their test straight onto something like a GSXR and get on fine.

My GSXR costs me roughly the same to run as my SV did. I get about the same MPG / miles to tank, servicing etc is not far off the same either. I run it on the same fuel that I did my SV to. The only thing its harder on is brakes and tyres. i.e. it eats rear tyres, but that is alot to do with my riding style.

The one thing the SV did was give me time to hone my riding skills, whereas the GSXR I have now is a bit full on and not something personally I'd want to ride if I was a novice rider...

+1 to the above, it might use more petrol, due to higher revs for the power, but that is down more to your riding than the engine! The 750 in the previous post presumably doesn't need to be ragged, a lot of people say sports 600's do, when I get one I'll find out! Should take the same gas, 95 octane (I think that is premium in the states). It won't eat tyres as much as the 750, again, riding style and roads used have more effect on that, I doubt there would be much difference. However it takes different sized tyres (180/55-17, 120/70-17) to the SV (160/60-17, 120/60-17). It actually has the more common tyre size, I don't know if this makes any difference price-wise.

In your position I would go for an SV (mine is my second bike, and I wanted an all-rounder, sports 600s seemed too focused for me) but that is only my choice. My first bike was a Kawasaki ZL600, bought because it was cheap, and because it was already well-worn and I didn't want to worry too much about drops. Having said that, if I'd tested a sports 600 I may well have bought one anyway, despite my original paring - down!

Either way, you won't have a lemon!
