All thanks to the Victorians (I believe) who invented the concept of a childhood. Because of this we have 18yo's who are still considered children, when in the past they would have been out of school and mostly responsible for themselves. The whole "Think of the children" thing is crazy. Are there really more Paedophiles and Perverts out there now than there were 20 years ago? I think society molly-coddles the young too much these days - well you cant even play run-after and catch games in the playground. To merge this thread with the Owners Responsible for Dogs one, why not have a law that if a child you are legally responsible for (as in Legal Guardian) commits a crime, you as the guardian are liable for it as if you had done it yourself. Rant over..............

What I'm saying as a rational adult, is that if you want to prevent kids from getting hurt, you need to look at how the most effective way of doing this is. Guilting an insignificant number of drivers into slowing down by a few mph while passing outside a school (which is where this argument started) which will result in achieving the square root of f**k all in reducing casualties - this is not the way. I'd bet money that more kids get squished no-where near school and by cars that aren't exceeding the limt than by speeding cars right outside the gate. As Soulkiss says, teaching kids that they've got to take responsibility for themselves would probably be more effective. I accept that this won't always work as kids will be kids sometimes, but there's little point trying to blame a driver (speeding or not) if you're dead. Can I just confirm I had a 7 year old come home with a greater awareness and appreciation of why it was dangerous to be on or around all roads - and also that she knows how many children have been hurt and injured in and around schools so also knows what could happen if she isnt careful - i.e. the consequences. Hopefully there was a few drivers out there that were also educated on why they should be careful driving past schools. Also, as a non-res i have no idea what green code is but I took it upon myself (as a "responsible" parent) to educate my kids on road safety a few years back. I view the excercise above as being supplementary to her knowledge and in my view a great way for children to interact and learn more on the subject. I had to giggle when she mentioned she got to have a go with the speed radar as well... ![]() |
