We did it from Southampton last year, admittedly with an overnight stop on the way up.

IIRC I think we did around 1700 miles over the 5 days we stayed up for - the long run up all the motorways was more than worthwhile once we got up there.

For anyone coming up via the M6, there is a B road that runs pretty much all the way alongside the A/M74 - the B7076/B7078. This was the old trunk road, now virtually deserted and great for a hoon on the way up.
