If everyone were free to decide what does and what does not constitute a danger, then we'd be in a parlous state. Everyone would drive at 60 in a 30 limit even if there weren't any schoolkids around - perhaps, to some, the fact that they were waiting out of sight behind a parked car before venturing into the road means that they aren't around. Sometimes you have to accept life and the rules that go with it, as I said up top usually the rules are there for good reason. Not always, true - there are some exceedingly crass ones - but usually rules have some good basis, no matter how hard it is to decipher.

Like using step ladders and not climbing on furniture. Sensible and appropriate, IMHO. I won't let my team climb on the furniture as if they fall off then I'll get sued. I don't want them getting injured, and I don't want to be sued.
Libertarianism, lovely Is this lack of care something new? Or is it the result of rules and regulations removing the need for people to judge the consequences of their own actions and stand responsible for them?

I saw a man in Sainsburys drop a bottle of wine the other day, he was fumbling with them all because of his bulky protective gloves

And the chair will twist round and slide across the floor, in falling off you'll crack your head open on the desk with blood and guts pouring out, your hair will go down the shredder, you'll reach out to grab hold of something only to find the scissors, and finally your feet will go onto a hot heater and you'll be horridly burned and disfigured for life

we aren't allowed to use step ladders we have to use platform ladders working in construction we are incredibly H & S conscious everything is pointed toward 0 accidents by 2010. and while sometimes it feels like things are being done for know reason this year in our region we haven't (touches wood) had a 3 day reportable accident.

but like Sarah no doubt we will be standing on our desks to put up decorations

Stepladders SHOULD only be used by trained personnel, I'm not making it up.

Whilst I agree about the 'Nanny State' mentality when it comes to personal liberty, when it comes to our working lives do any of you people who moan & whinge understand RIDDOR- Reporting of Injuries, Diseases & Dangerous Occurences Regulations ?

Basically, without going into the nitty gritty, if your company has too many of these (and it only needs you to be unable to do your normal job or tasks for 3 days INCLUDING WEEKENDS) & you won't have a job to moan about !!

Thats balls by the way, to many reportable incidents wont result in a workplace being shut down.

Like in the IT business where there are certain types of IT stereotypes, its exactly the same with H&S ....theres

- The type A who wear glasses with a strap on them so they dont get broken, they claim to know every piece of legislation under the sun (impossible), the type whos role is so pathetic and pointless they come up with ****e policies that wastes peoples time.

- Then there the type B who take things into perspective and are sensible with choices and decisions made.

Type A - Normally work for a local authority, are old and retired, or are self employeed and are paid small retainers by small companies who dont know any better, they normally earn £18k - £24k and are filled with self importance and think they have more influence than they really have....they are the type who report something to the HSE whilst on holiday.

Type B - Normally work on a large complex construction project, on complicated off-shore establishments or often not even in this country and choose the middle east or danger zones like Iraq or Nigeria.....they normally earn £40k - £100k+....they are the type who keep a low profile, rarely admit to what profession they are involved in and often cringe and shudder at the rediculous bad reputation that type A give health & safety.
