Yes. I inherited the three younger ones after their dad died and I started seeing their mum. I am the only dad the two younger ones have ever known as their real dad died in a car crash when they were very young -Daniel was only 4 months old and Gina was coming up to 2 yrs old (Jess has very vague memories of her father cos she was 4 when he died). Their mum and I lived together for 7 years all told from when Dan was 13 months, and I've been in regular contact with them since we split because we both didn't want them to lose another dad. They called me dad, still do, but I was never married to their mother. They regard me as more ex-step-dad than mum's ex-boyfriend - so between us we coined the term ex-nearly-step-dad.

As much as the idea may appeal at times, it's a definite no-no.
