It's quite common and the good thing is, paw pads heal incredibly quickly in dogs so if you can, just leave them for the air to get to them and clean them off with a mild hibiscrub solution if he hets it dirty.
As for the seeds that have come out of the skin between his paws.....again, keep clean and try and let the air get to them Periodically throughout the day go and hold his paws. The bad one in one hand and the opposite paw in your other hand. Check to see if there's any heat in the bad paw so that you can pick up on infection quickly and you can also do this by inspecting it's colour, any swelling and smell. It sounds like a pretty simple thing to me though. You've got them out, have another look with your mum tonight, but after that, just leave it for a few days and see how he goes. Do the checks above, but don't poke or prod anymore. That way, no more soreness means he's ok....more soreness after 2 days means something is still in there. You can also pick up a collar from your vet if you haven't already got one to cut down the amount that he can lick it. Good luck hun and if you're worried, just call your vet...no need to make a visit everytime. x |

Most often, seeds get into ears and thay can be a real pain for the dog and hard to get out. Have a think about where you've walked him recently that he could have picked up the seeds and avoid that area for a while. Also, don't completely cut his walks, just lead walk him for a couple of days and don't let him run too much. LOTS of games inside though to keep him active and work his little brain!!! |

Thanx GG - I have recently reseeded my lawn which is most probably the problem
![]() Yesterday I took him to play in his fav long grass fields where he loves jumping around, so no more of that LOL. They have fenced it off to use as growing hay for the cattle, they used to have it shorter ![]() I have checked all his other paws and they are fine, few grass seeds in the long fur between his toes so he has had a trim as they were hidden. No long fur = no grass seeds ![]() I have put the anti botic powder on which he keeps licking off, obvioulsy sore so I will leave his boot on for the walk and let the powder dry the wound up then let it air later. Just take 2 more sprouting seeds from the wound with tweezers, LOL Sam was pinned down by my mum and her partner ha ha like being at work, doggy tackles ![]() Thanks for your help GG I will keep checking and make sure he isnt sore, I don't want to run him to the vets everytime he has a little issue. Someone mentioned silica? Where would I get that from, natural herbal remedy to help bring foreign bodies out???

No probs Shell...only telling you what I'd do myself as I'm no vet. Personally I wouldn't bother with the powder. It stops the air getting to it and if it gets damp, it can create a warm, moist area in which bacteria can breed. Having a bottle of hibiscrub in the house is fab for things like this. You can clean wounds out regularly but leave them dry and let them heal quicker...also, the licking won't cause ingestion of anything.
If anyone is going to be super careful about this stuff it's me. Stig had to have a toe amputated after getting a miniscule piece of glass in between two of his paw pads and he had to have 3 exploratory ops before the final and was on three legs for 4 months. We couldn't see a thing with that, no entry wound as the glass was too small and it didn't even show up on X ray. They couldn't find it when they opened his foot up three times and so ended up just taking the infected toe off. That piece of glass worked its way out over a year later and was about the size of a grain of cous cous. If he's not limping, he should be fine, but really just keep a close eye for infection. EDIT: I wouldn't use any silica or aerogel products unless a vet prescribed them as you really don;t want Samson ingesting that. Yu don't want to use anything that will create a film over the exit wounds either....however small they are. Good luck hun xxx Last edited by gruntygiggles; 24-07-09 at 03:19 PM. |

Deffo leave the boot off, but get him a collar if he's licking it too much. Licking it for a few seconds here and there won't harm him, but licking at it all the time will. That's why I mentioned a collar in the first post. None of us can see what it's like though, so if you're unsure, just call the vet. Oh and those collars are cheap too!

Oh I know....they are crazy sometimes aren't they. Saffie had a few visits back anf fore last month after her Spay op.
What is the boot like for ventilation? Maybe a way around it would be to clean, vet powder on and boot on wen you can't be with him and then when you get back, boot off, good clean out and leave to get air while you are able to stop him licking. Even if it means having him on the sofa all through the evening with you and as much as poss during the day so that you can physically stop him, but let it air. |

![]() ![]() No ventilation so the boot has come off, he is now just sitting sulking. Having a girlie night in so he can sit in between us and have cuddles and be watched like a hawk. I will keep my eye on it for next few days. ![]()
