Daddylonglegs are harmless to us, but are still predatory animals. Actually, Spiders are arachnids and are quite dissimilar to insects. Insects have a head, thorax and Abdomen, spiders only have two body parts. Insects also have six limbs. Spiders have eight legs and two pedipalps that can be misinterpreted as legs. That is the basics anyway. The Goliath Spider is native to South America and grow to the size of a dinner plate. Other defensive features that it has are the ability to flick hairs from it's abdomen as a dust. These hairs are barbed and needle sharp and will cause severe discomfort to any animal that is hit by them. Have a look at this for an example of a defensive response. The hairs cause an irritation to soft tissue and can cause a dramatic effect to both the eyes and membranes in the air way. Nasty, but very effective. With a trick like that, venom is hardly needed for defence. ![]() By the way, this is all stuff I learned while keeping a Honduran Curly Hair Tarantula named Ruby, who was very similar to this one. ![]() |

+1 to Jayne on the daddy longlegs thing. That myth was made HUGE by Ricky Gervais, but has not truth to it. Spindly Spiders do though. Like I said, I can't say for sure but I do remember finding out from someone that they have this incredible venom, just that they can only use it on other arachnids and insects.
I don't know nearly as much as Jayne, but I have grown up always wanting to learn more about all creatures. Through my learning of Spiders, these are the four that I would avoid and NOT decide to have a closer look at.....actually, I'd go running! Brown Recluse ![]() this is a 9 day ols bite site, they have necrotic venom which kills tissue. Only happens in about 10% of bite victims though. ![]() Funnel Web ![]() Brazillian Wandering Spider ![]() looks like a tarantula a bit but these are incredibly aggressive and will jump to attck whatever it feels threatened by or sees as prey and they have these to bite you with... ![]() Last but not least.....the Australian Golden Orb Spider ![]() Do you all feel better now guys??? |

Yeah, they don't bother me at all...just scoop them up in my hand and chuck them out the window.....when the dogs don't eat them first!
