Storms. They'll give you a hell of a lot of confidence. They stick to the road like glue, even in snow. Now if the Ultras are anything like, you'll be grinning for weeks after the GM

ultra sticky tyres are good if you get the weather. but its scotland it rains at the flick of a switch up here.

get the storms m8 they are cracking tyres.

BTW, Strathern tyres in Crieff are a good if you pre book. that way you wont have to go threw the centre of glasgow and you will have a cracking road to scrub them on going to the campsite plus you will have squared off your old set coming up and not your nice new set.

dont be. the storms are good to go straight from the fitters . people rave about them on the SV for a good reason.

BTW the GM is not a race its a ride out, there are all paces in different groups. from bimble to missile with the main pack being 'moderately' paced.

Personally I would change tyres before I came up.

I'm presuming that you will be riding between now and the GMIII as per normal. If so then it is highly unlikely that you will still have 3mm.

As Bibio says you could ride up, see how you tyres are and if in doubt get a change at Strathearn Tyres in crieff. They are open till 5 on Friday and 12.30 on Saturday and they're on the way to the campsite if you come up via crieff.

I have found that the last few mm of a tyre seem to wear much quicker than the first few the hard way. When I did the first north/south meet a few years ago, I thought my tyres would be fine. After riding 300 miles up to the lake district, the rear was starting to look very dodgy. After another 300 miles of caning it around some great roads they were completely shagged. I had to take it easy for the last bit of the day, and then got a puncture in the rear on the way back to the hotel.

Managed to fix it, and nurse it the 300 miles back home, however it meant I could only do 60-70 mph and it would have cost me if I had got pulled.

I have just put a brand new set of Storm Ultra2s on my sprint ready for GMIII and would definitely recommend that you do the same
