I'm obviously the wimp around here, having been faster in my car than on a bike. But one Sunday morning this summer I'm going to get up around 5am and give my VFR a high speed run.
Car = 143 (gps) Bike = 125 (indicated) A speedometer must read between 0% and 10% over (Construction and Use Regulations). So most manufacturers aim for the middle and read around 5% over to allow for manufacturing tolerances and variations in tyre size. In a straight line a decent gps will do much better than 5%. Keith. Fastest I have driven a car is 140 in my Alfa 156 V6.
What I was more concerned about was the mpg at that time which was probably about 6

I scrubbed out a full set of tyres in the Bentley in 5 laps - the reason I pulled in was it was tea break time and when I got out of the car I noticed the rubber on the sidewalls of the offside tyres was shredded, I bent down to have a look and found huge strips of rubber missing for the full circumference of the outside edge of the o/side tyres and the inside edge of the n/side set. They were only rated to 150mph and I'd been giving it the full 165 - 170mph for 5 full laps, no wonder they were starting to delaminate. Had it not been tea break I'd have carried on driving like that for another few laps until something catastrophic had happened. Despite all the hype about being a test driver, it's probably the most boring job I have ever had. Doing 140mph all day every day on the same 2 mile piece of road is enough to drive you to drink, and many's the time I'd fall asleep at the wheel while driving at those speeds. I'd pray that the next day I'd be given a different schedule to drive to so I could explore other parts of the circuit, like the Alpine Route and off-road course. I've had this bike for 5 years and still not had it flat out but I am not concerned about straight line speed.Give me a nice twisty road and a bike or car with a bit of grunt.I have red lined my Porsche when I had it and that was "Interesting"

Hmm, my turn and no laughing. I only passed my test last month...
![]() Mountain bike - 48MPH Down hill on smooth track Indicated speed on well set up computer. It is still my aim to one day break the Fifty barrier. Little bike - 68MPH, smooth road down hill, duel carriageway. Had my head tucked down to just above my front L-Plate. SV on my own - 97 indicated (restricted to 33BHP) Long down hill over taking on the Motorway, got freaked that it was so fast and pulled in and settled at 73MPH! SV on pillion - Me and Carol heading over to Bristol for the last Star Trek Movie. Warp Factor 9.99! (115MPH in old money) Sylvie prior to being restricted. So for wimping out on ya all there. Although my top speed was coincidentally not long after receiving a message from a certain Mr YC, who told me to open the throttle some more, because I was some kind of cat! So it was all his fault Officer! ![]() |
