And that is coming from someone who only ever wanted to be a Para from the age of about 8, yet even then I knew the front line was the wrong place for a woman and would have to settle for a support role.

It has nothing to do with their capabilities, strengths or skills.

It comes down to the fact that a unit working in teh kind of situations that SF do needs to be totally cohesive with no weak links. A woman is a weak link - it may not be right, but you can argue it till you blue in the face and it won't change one simple thing - a woman is an obvious pressure point that can be exploited.

Generations of societies rules and upbringing dictate this. Until, the world over, everyone is treated on their own merit, regardless of sex or race, then there will always be some measure of inequality.
And you simply can't have that in what is supposed to be a single, cohesive unit.

The fitness test is designed to identify a particular standard, which for the purposes of this post we'll call 'average'. If the test is not gender specific, an average man would pass and an average female would fail because, as you point out, she has lesser cardio vascular capacity.

Result? Women would have to be above average to pass the test!

By making the standard lower for women you make the test gender neutral and fairer for everyone.
