Heres a question!

How do you measure intelligence?

Is it the ability to retain whole load of learnt material i,e so called iq

Or is it the ability to solve problems/ practical skills etc so called common sense?

Or is it combination of the two or something else.

As already said alot of so called intelligent people who have got degrees etc lack common sense or practical skills as opposed to people who havent been to uni and have learned there skills through more practical hands on means, alot of these people posses very different skills to the uni lot, so who would you say is the more intelligent?? how is it measured? can it be measured?

This is a serious question im not having a pop at either side im genuinely interested to find peoples views on this.

I agree that both are not mutually exclusive(or mutually inclusive for that matter) hence why I stated "sadly it would seem , not many" .

The above said, the percentages you have given above would suggest, ' not many' might not be, quite the right choice of words to have used eh

As always, there is always a point to be found by what we all say .

I quite enjoy parts of it. I just don't like getting bundled in with the students who do Animal Studies or some weak-ass arts degree.

You've got to read a book?!; boo hoo! I'm crying you a f'ing river over here!

So many of the engineers I work with are so socially incompetent though Washing is something you presumably must do before each season, and no more often.

As for truckers; well the market pays the market rate. If it truly was an easy job for great money you'd have everyone trying to do it. I think the main issue is that we're all feeling 'the squeeze' and feel undervalued and underpaid.

Quite right and which brings us nicely back to BB posts

ETA: Another question. What exactly is 'market rate' ? lol

So now the big question. Intelligence V Sense.....which one kicks more ar$e

Nope no correlation at all. A couple of the best lads on my course are total cabbages.

Then again, intelligence can be separated from learning by IQ tests, how do you quantify common sense?

I would suggest "Market Forces" have everything to do with it. There is more and more cheap labour becoming available in the UK, some of it very welcome and desperately needed as it does seem some of our locals just don't want the work. However there is also some allegedly "skilled" cheap labour becoming available, ie: truck drivers, who appear on paper to have all the necessary qualifications to do a job and are yet prepared to work for half the rate. They manage this because they didn't have to pay so much for their training (if indeed they had any) and they don't have the overheads to maintain their skills or qualifications (in other words they are quite happy to break the law because they know it is unlikely to affect them) The problem for us as the general public is that those doing the hiring and firing don't have to deal with the consequence of this, they just see the reduced overhead/increased profit. In short if there are cheap drivers around and the industry is allowed to use them, it will.
However my understanding is that none of this applies to the road tanker industry. I believe they are almost closed shop, partly due to the extremely strong union they have (mentioned earlier) so they are in fact one of the few groups of truck drivers not being affected by the cheap opposition. Please correct me if I'm mistaken.....

I'm not so sure you can say(well obviously you can lol) intelligence can be seperated from learning via IQ test per se.

Is the ability to learn related to intelligence?....for the sake of discussion, we shall say "what ever we deem intelligence to actually be " .

Re quantifying 'sense', we can do that by the degree of variation from total cabbageness perhaps .

Seriously, I'm not even sure how you can. Tempted to say, it's impossible as too much subjectivity would be involved.....Is wholely or partly an abstract quality, all said and done ?.

How do(do they even?) life experiences impact, increase(?) the amount of 'sense' we possess.....

Cheers
Ben

i dont think theres any one way of determining how clever someone is, my dad left school at 14, however hes a very good carpenter and i would say way more clever than myself when it comes to certain things.

I often wonder how much "intelligence" is wasted, as who knows whether you have a gift for something you may never know. You could be in the wrong job
