When they're the ONLY statistics you have, then they're bound to be relevant.

As I said in my post, I'm fully aware of the implications of sample size & projections etc.

That said, keithd asked a genuine question (if it wasn't genuine, I'm going to assume it was as it helps the point). Assuming someone is genuinely scared about this epidemic, and they stumble across this thread, they'll see that they have somewhere in the region of 1-3% of dying should they contract swine flu.

That alone will put most people's minds at rest, which was my intention in posting it.

That said, due to the sample size vs the projection, the actual mortality rate will more than likely be far less than 1% once this epidemic is over & all the numbers are in. So I over estimated, and potentially put peoples mind's at rest.

Surely if you factor in that the one kid who has died in USA caught the bug in Mexico and then got taken across the border makes the figures totally unrepresentative.Death rates are not predictable at all yet,and in any case will depend on availaility of medical care, its quality and, especially, who is being exposed to the illness. If you let any form of flu run riot in hospital chest ward it will kill a high % whereas the same bug would likely barely affect the nursing staff who work in the same hossie.Truth is we dont know what if any affect this bug will have here,so little point in worrying about it.

Please follow commonsense and responsible preventative measures:
• Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze.
• Bin your tissue after use.
• If you don’t have a tissue, cough or sneeze into your upper sleeve, not your hands.
• Wash your hands regularly with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze and before eating.
• Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Flu spreads that way. --> "oh really? I never knew! (can you tell im being sarcastic?)
• Stay away from others if you develop flu-like symptoms. Tell someone and go home.
That's a joke!
Simple hygiene?

I´ve just turned on sky news to find Max Clifford representing the honeymoon couple that has the virus in the UK!!!

Clearly the man realised how lucrative patients could be and has jumped on the band wagon to make himself some more money!!!

Hang on a sec, grab some perspective. What's more likely for me as a fit healthy 30-something biker:
death by swine flu ? call it 0.01%
death by slippery corner/dozy pensioner in a nissan ? about 5%
death by cancer or heart disease ? 40-ish% I think
Pffft.
And lets not forget the key statistic: Death by something (even chocolate): 100%

I haven't read through responses but I think its the media over emphasising it, causing the government to act upon it to reduce moral panic in society as people think they're gonna catch it.
