I'm a dog person. There's no question of that but I really am at a loss at what you expect people with cats to do??! Cats are only semi domesticated. They don't get trained the same way as a dog does.

I agree that she shouldn't be calling people ungrateful but I really don't see anything wrong with her giving people suggestions as to how to avoid this car coming into their houses.

This attitude of "but it's not my problem, I shouldn't have to so anything to fix it" really drives me mental. If it is annoying people so much and people are offering them potential solutions which they refuse to do or even consider then they become just as much at fault in my eyes.

And further to that, I'm another firm believer that cats are not the cause of the birds etc dying out. They may be a contributory factor but there are many other factors in it too. And the animal that most likes to kill small animals for fun is a bloody fox. And we all know the fox population is increasing.
I have no need to chill...this is just a questioning thread. We all have out own opinions and I am not wound up at all...I just don't understand some of the attitudes and wanted to know what others thought.

Reporting anything to do with a cat being a nuisance to the police would be a ridiculous waste of police time...did someone mention reporting to the police?

With regards to this...

"But it's not my problem, I shouldn't have to do anything to fix it"

It isn't about someones problem...it is about responsibility. It is not my responsibility to do lots of the things I do, but I do them anyway because I'd be a pretty crappy person if I didn't. But the attitude that someone else needs to change the way they live in order to deal with an animal that is someone elses responsibility dumbfounds me.

If it were happening to me, I would take the suggestions and throw water over, be grateful that the owner supplied a water pistol etc. this thread is about the owners attitude that she only wants other people to deal with her problem cat in a way that she approves of. It is her cat...it is not fair to dictate to others how to deal with it. It has had a dog needing veterinary care already. How can it be right that people have to either do as she says or put up with it?

Yes they did.

Anyway my telling you to chill was because, and I don't say this lightly to you, but you have come across as wound up, nippy and to be honest a bit rude in this Cheryl.

"Thanks but again, irrelevant" springs to mind.

But whatever. You've posted your opinion and you don't seem to want to listen to anyone else's regarding this and just keep repeating your own of 'its your responsibility therefore not my problem' view.

What do you actually expect this woman to do? Get it put down? Because I'm pretty sure she won't be able to confine it to the house how.

To be fair, although foxes seem to kill for fun, some of it has to do with them seeing a load of food in one spot and making sure they kill a lot at one time to come back for later, they're a bit limited in how much they can take back to their den. But obviously we clear away all evidence of a massacre and the fox comes back to find more chickens! And a vicious cycle begins But this isn't about wild animals killing prey that we put under their noses, suppose tis t'otha way about!
I don't like foxes. I've seen the mess they make of lambs and sheep and pheasants and ducklings and so on and so forth. The cubs defo do it for fun. Maybe the older foxes are doing it to come back later but I've watched a cub and it was for fun!

But you're allowed to shoot foxes and nobody bats an eyelid.*

*Except the odd crunchy hippy, but they're not really people anyway.

Doesn't sound like she's trying too hard lets be honest.

In fact sounds like she's fairly set that it's the neighborhoods problem, not hers.

Her property is causing other people a nuisance, and she has the cheek to write letters telling you what you can and can't do about it?

If I have come across as rude, I apologise, never my intention.

If it seems I don't want to listen to anyone else's opinion, again, apologies. I am simply questioning reasons. If I have repeated myself, it is because I have felt a need to in response to certain replies.

I am not normally a nippy person...perhaps just fed up with the, "it's my animal but you need to deal with it attidue".

I'm not wrong to think that, you're not wrong to disgaree

See that's the point, I don't think anyone is disagreeing it's the owners responsibility but when it gets to this point where a cat is concerned, what the hell can they do?

Cats are a nightmare and I'm personally fed up of them crapping in my garden but I realise there's nowt much I can do about it.

A cub unfortunately has to learn somewhere and chickens are easy prey. Young birds of prey are brought live animals by their parents to practice hunting in flight and if it happens to be a pigeon then the birds are shot, hardly fair. Similarly, a fox doesn't know the difference between a chicken and a rabbit except that one takes a lot less effort to chase. These are wild animals who act on their own instinct for survival, I hardly think fun is top priority, just what us humans like to anthropomorphise it as. Cats, on the other hand, will hunt when there's plenty of biscuits at home but because they're cute and cuddly we can't do owt about it!

Not sure why you think there is heated debate and rudeness in this thread MBK, it's not come across as that to me. Perhaps you're reading too much into it. "Thanks but again irrelevant" is merely an observation. Too much tiptoeing on eggshells round here. Say what you mean and mean what ya bloody well say!

Eh? Young birds of prey get shot for having a pigeon? Enlighten me. Never heard of that, but then I could easily have misread.

Ok slight wrong wording then, depends how you read it. Pigeon fanciers hate birds of prey and will shoot the parents yes. Many birds of prey are heavily persecuted by gamekeepers and pigeon fanciers alike, for preying on their precious pheasants and racing pigeons. Glad you're assisting the digressing of your own thread GG, doesn't make me feel so bad

That was what I was wondering too...this thread has been very eye opening in the sense that it seems some cat owners do confine them and it has worked for them. If that is a possibility it could be a great compromise. Get to keep your cat, get to prevent a nuisance to others.

I'm all for a good derail

Each to their own in terms of what you fancy, lol...but shooting birds of prey? Sad

I bet they get away with it even for protected species as well don't they?
