i beg to differ depend's how you work your squad and the menu system which is fluid when you get used to it firefight's can last a while using flanking maneuvre's and suppressing fire don't play it if you can't concentrate for long period's nothing wrong with the game.

I have finally just played the first mission. I have promised my mate I will wait until we coop the whole game for the rest though. here are my initial thoughts.

I love the first menu and music! It's really chunky, really atmospheric, looks good and feels good. On starting the first mission, the cut scene explaining the situation was also really good I thought, its way more slick than just the original OFP cut scenes. As soon as you start, though, I found the controls a bit hard. Everytime it said "pick up some ammo with the interact button" and "tell your team to cover and fire with the control squad button" I had to hit Escape and go into the keyboard control list to find out what the keys were. I found I have been examining the keyboard control list way too much so far, trying to bring up a gear menu (doesn't exist), binoculars (B? No F1!). Not very intuitive. Having said that, once you get the hang of hitting Q AFTER giving orders, then the move and cover system works very well I think. They really shoul dhave the menu disappear afer you give an order though. I find it a bit hard to lie down, and move, and reload and fire, it seems to block you from doing certain things when you are doing other things. But the looks and feel of the game are pretty good. Firing the gun and guns firing back at you are pretty cool. But you have to hit people way too much to kill them. Sometimes it takes a couple of rakes and they still are firing back. So in short, it doesn't feel very OFPy, but I think once you do these missions coop they will just be totally awesome fun!

I've had my head blown off by my own squad... the night mission, told my squad to engage some targets... and I had my head blown off, as one of them was standing behind me at the time...
There are some good points... I've done the coastal stronghold mission... bit on the easy side, but I love the way the enemy falls to the ground when hit with the sniper rifle ! But after I finish a mission.. I just go hmmm.. and start up ArmA 2 and play on that instead...
not to mention the fact that codemasters have lied about several items of the PC game...
It's not a console port... could have fooled me ! it screams of a console game made to run on the PC...
It'll support joysticks... No it bloody well doesn't at the moment ! and I aint getting an Xbox controller for my PC thanks !

and the worst...

It will support Track IR... again.. it doesn't...

Codemasters just just trying to sell the game, and then sell the patches / DLC whatever afterwards to give us what it should have been on release...

Mix some aspects of this game with ArmA 2 .. and that would have been OFP 2 done there...

I just played some more Arma 2; its obvioust that Arma 2 is the real war sim! Just had my head blown off about 10 times in a row trying to assault a base. I think Arma is more realistic, but I still think that coop on either game would be fantastic.

right ive been playing for a while now so here are my thoughts.

firstly, its got console port written all over it. Being a realist however, kind of tells you that this is the sign of things to come rather than a one off. Most games in the future will be ported console games as these platforms outsell the PC many to one.

Secondly, the multiplayer is broken. A few friends and I have managed to get it working over hamachi and this seems to let us use the lan features over the internet. But come on CM, broken mulitplayer and no dedicated servers. This is an absolute no no for any modern game (its like mario without stars!)

Thirdly, the controls are quirky. Cant issue commands when moving cant swap weapons when moving. Switch from main gun to grenade to main gun and its like youve popped into the holy grail and you are waiting for someone to finish reading the instructions for the holy grenade of antioch. THe fact that the mouse even works astounds me as everything in the game seems to mimic a ps3 or xbox controller which in my view are **** poor control devices for fps.

Fourthly, camoflage and this one is in my opinion the worst. if you stand 100 yards from someone in a typical wooded area and they crouch down they will be hidden by bushes grass etc. if you look at the same person but do it from say 200 yards then it looks like they are taking a dump in the middle of a clearing!! i.e the bushes are not rendered after certian distances. Now while a understand this at really long distances, when camoflage is so important it is absolute rubbish that if you creep up on a base you are spotted 400 yards away even though you think you are in the middle of a bush garden and all they can see is you lying down in what appears to them to be a green desert. Check it out next time you play its weird.

I sound like im slating it and I am to a certain extent, but there actually is a bloody good game in here. AI works really well like taking cover behind trees, running just below hills for cover. We had one set of AI today drop smoke before retreating! nice touch. The Island itself is excellent and so are the scripted missions, if a little sparse. But then of course we have the editor which I have merrily been playing away with today recreating some scenes from saving private ryan for a map im doing. Co-op is excellent and with the editor offers limitless changes to scenarios for you and your mates to play.

I think it hits that niche market between COD4 and Arma. A game you can just pick adn play but doesnt involve nade spamming and spawn shoot die every few seconds. I grant you that some of the bugs and the multiplayer issue are basically unforgivable in a new release. I do however have some sympathy as the juggernaut that is MW2 will trounce any military shooter released at the same time and I know I wouldnt want ot be releasing a game I had worked 3 years on at the same time. ARMA and ARMA 2 are the true Operation Flash Points 2 and take realism on to the next stage way past OFPDR but to me have lost some of that accesibility for it.

so for me 8/10 for the game thats inside somewhere and 2/10 for execution.

patched and debugged this would be awesome.

my bug fix list in no particular order.

mouse controlled orders
move and orders at same time
faster and more intuitive weapon swaps
foliage that actually offers cover from all distances (Draw distance issue)
fixed multiplayer
being able to move head in vehicles while driving

thats it for now.

Played it a bit more yesterday, doing the second mission.

I think I am starting to like this game, I'm slowly beginning to understand the use of orders and how to use them effectivly

I'm yet to do Co-op missions online, but I am slowly beginning to enjoy it.

+1

I just played it long into the night/morning (on a PS3)

intro and menu:
Very good presentation and sounds, like the style of menu graphic, colours and interim screens, its gritty and has weight to it.

where is the training exercise? learn the controls, weapons and order system in a boot camp? lazy barstools.

In game graphic:
At first I was impressed by the scale and natural feel of the landscape, well populated with trees/grass, rise and falls with ditches and small hills. but a few minutes later as I started to move I noticed 'pop ups', the actual texture of trees changes as you approach it! The texture of trees looks good at a distance and fantastic at close, but the massive jump of texture change between the two as you move around is unforgivable on a game like this! As every time there is a 'pop up' it appears as a possible enemy movement and becomes have distracting. come on, FarCry2 managed it.

As Rog mentioned above, draw distance is a problem too...

The look and few of weapons are first class, from actioning it to look through sight, it all feels just right. I agree that the changing/handling of weapon feels heavy but I like it as it does give weight to objects, after all these are heavy metal toys.

Lighting, is great, from mid day, sun set to moon lit, landscape comes to live as it's colour and shade changes accordingly, they nailed this.

AI - oh dear, I'm not sure if they are being funny and try to reflect the fact that the U.S. likes blue on blue situations! I have got hit but not killed as a result of enemy fire yet, but have die twice, twice in an hour by friendly fire, not from the sky or artillery, but my own team, and not just one or two shots accident, but a RPG into my back from 10m as I take point behind a wall. 15min later, while in pone position firing at a outpost (team in waged, combat spread formation), my support gun unloaded his LMG rounds into my back while he strafe across behind me! whats the point of a waged formation and have orders!

AI can't drive to 'save their lives' . within 30mins of first mission, I spotted a jeep trying to drive up a cliff, it may be 4x4 but after trying for 5mins, the AI should really rethink and use the road that goes around and up. Then another AI driver going through a village, comes to a junction, doesn't go straight or turn left, he goes into the fencing of the junction... and keeps trying to drive through it, reverse a little, and tries again, straight into the fence! I felt so sorry for the passenger I wanted to shoot the driver for him.

AI likes to swim too, on first mission assaulting the light house on North of the small island, as my team approached, a enemy team of four came running out a house, on to the beach and straight into the sea and stayed they floating, it was a turkey shoot.

Driving, why can't I look around when I drive!!! this is not USA where roads are straight and looking left/right is too much effort! my gods, do they actually hire kids/non drivers to write games now?

Animation: overall is good and I like it, however, I don't like it when the screen goes blank as I get in/out of a vehicle, and there is no driver view, only bonnet or 3rd person, this is plain lazy. but for the love of Queen and country, why is it that when my team approaches to mount a vehicle they magically disappears and 1/2 second later reappears inside it, then the doors open and close automatically? come on guys, we can't have magic spells this day and age, it breaks the very important reality feel that a game like this relies on. I excepted it on OPF1, but no way on OPF2, if it can be done in FarCry2, why not here.

Final note, I enjoyed the game a lot, feels like OPF1 with better look and feel along with new toys and world, but it is too buggy and that spoils the OPF2 world!!!!! Like a sweet V-twin but miss firing at time. IMO it is not ready for release, it has been rushed out before MW2. They better issue fixes and DLC soon.
